Harry Kane celebrated his 300th Premier League appearance this week with two goals in Tottenham’s 4-0 win at Crystal Palace.

It was a memorable milestone for the England captain, who continued his prolific record this season and his climb up the Premier League’s all-time goal charts.

Kane is closing in on becoming just the third player to reach 200 goals in the division and no player has ever scored more Premier League goals in their first 300 appearances.

Robbie Fowler – 140

Robbie Fowler burst onto the scene at Liverpool with a stunning goalscoring run, as the Toxteth teenager scored 12 times in his first 13 appearances for the Reds.

A debut goal against Fulham in the League Cup was followed with five against the Cottagers in the return leg, a performance which catapulted Fowler into the consciousness. He netted a hat-trick in his fifth league appearance and later famously netted another treble inside five minutes against Arsenal.

No player has ever scored more than Fowler’s 64 goals in the Premier League before his 21st birthday, with even the likes of Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney failing to match that total.

Remarkably, Fowler scored 80 times in 135 games for Liverpool before his international debut for England, as the forward reached 30+ goals in three consecutive campaigns between 1995 and 1997.

Regarded as one of the most natural finishers the Premier League has seen, Fowler’s accuracy and technique was unerring as he plundered goals at his Liverpool peak. He struggled to recapture the form of his explosive emergence during his latter career, but remains the eighth-highest goalscorer in Premier League history.

Michael Owen – 146

Michael Owen followed in the footsteps of Fowler after emerging from Liverpool’s academy ranks as a teenage star.

Owen marked his Premier League debut with a goal against Wimbledon, before announcing his arrival with a brilliant first full season. He became the first and only teenager to win the Premier League’s Golden Boot during the 1997/98 campaign, before retaining the accolade the following season.

Boasting explosive pace and an ice-cold temperament around goal, Owen scored 118 goals in just 216 league appearances for Liverpool. He won the FA Cup, two League Cups and the UEFA Cup with the Reds, with his performances during the club’s 2000/01 campaign earning Owen the Ballon d’Or.

His latter career was decimated with injuries, as he struggled to replicate the form of his early career during spells at Newcastle, Manchester United and Stoke. He retired with 150 goals in 326 Premier League appearances.

Andy Cole – 151

It’s become a common narrative that Andy Cole is rarely discussed among the Premier League’s finest forwards, but the former Newcastle and Manchester United forward boasts a record comparable to any of the division’s greats.

No player has ever reached 50 goals in the Premier League faster than Cole, who took just 65 games of an incredible breakthrough with Newcastle to achieve the feat. That record is one faster than Alan Shearer and three quicker than Ruud van Nistelrooy, two footballers often praised for their clinical touch.

Cole exploded in the Premier League during the 1993/94 season, as the inspiration behind Newcastle’s impressive return to the division. He won the PFA Young Player of the Year and Premier League Golden Boot after scoring 34 league goals, a record for a single season that still stands.

He signed for Manchester United in a £7m British record deal in 1995, where he won five league titles and the Champions League during a decorated career at Old Trafford. His iconic partnership with Dwight Yorke remains a benchmark for two-man forward lines, as the duo combined in devastating fashion.

Just three players have ever scored more than Cole’s 187 goals in the Premier League and just one of those goals, somewhat astonishingly, came from the penalty spot.

Alan Shearer – 196

Alan Shearer retains a God-like status in the Premier League’s pantheon of goalscoring greats, with the Geordie goal-machine out in front and by some distance.

Shearer thundered home 260 goals during a brilliant career in the division, bursting the back of the net with regularity during spells at Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle.

Shearer’s best football came in the colours of the former, as he became the first – and so far only – man to score 30+ league goals in multiple campaigns. He achieved the feat in three successive seasons, the second of which fired Blackburn to the Premier League title in 1994/95.

A three-time winner of the Premier League’s Golden Boot, he signed for boyhood club Newcastle in a £15m world-record deal in 1996. Despite injuries impacting his latter seasons, Shearer netted 206 goals in the famous black and white of the Magpies. No player has ever scored more for the club.

Harry Kane – 198

Shearer’s landmark after 300 games looked an unbeatable target, but Harry Kane moved past the division’s record goalscorer with his brace at Crystal Palace.

Kane has now scored 198 goals in the division and is fast closing in on joining Shearer and Wayne Rooney in the Premier League’s 200-goal club.

He is also just two goals from Jimmy Greaves’ club record for Spurs, having levelled Rooney as England’s all-time record goalscorer at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Erling Haaland’s goalscoring brilliance has somewhat reduced the limelight on Kane this season, but the 29-year-old is in the midst of a superb season and has 15 goals in 18 league games. He now appears within real reach of Shearer’s Premier League total.

There were many who believed it was a milestone that might not be bettered, but Kane – in fine form right now and with several seasons ahead of him – could just catch it.
