Premier League awards: Haaland’s battle, influential Odegaard, and sleepy Rashford

Our weekly Premier League awards honour the best – and worst – of the football action from the New Year’s fixtures.

Moment of the week

It’s been a story of dropped points at the top end of the Premier League, with no result perhaps more surprising than a struggling Everton side taking a point from reigning champions, Manchester City.

Meanwhile, Arsenal’s six-goal thriller against Brighton was a game to behold, the league leaders racing into a three goal lead, before the Seagulls staged a comeback.

Were it not for VAR, it would have been 4-3 with a few minutes to go, as Roberto de Zerbi’s side showed that the Gunners can be got at.

Goal of the week

Demarai Gray collects this award for his stunner against Manchester City

The winger drove down the left, but seemed to be running out of options as City got numbers back into the box and around the ball. However, despite losing his footing, the 26-year-old set himself before unleashing an unstoppable finish into the top corner.

Player of the Week

Martin Odegaard is one of the most influential players in the Premier League right now, and the Norwegian put in yet another important performance as Arsenal extended their lead at the top of the table.

While the world has been purring over the goalscoring exploits of a certain Norwegian at Manchester City, Odegaard put in another excellent display while taking his tally to seven goals and five assists in the 4-2 win over Brighton.

The 24-year-old swept home from the edge of the area from a corner to make it 2-0, albeit courtesy of a deflection, before laying on a super assist with a sensational ball through to Gabriel Martinelli who made it four.

Save of the week

Manchester United made it back-to-back wins and successive clean sheets after their hard-fought 1-0 win over Wolves in the early kick on New Year’s Eve.

However, the Red Devils did have goalkeeper David de Gea to thank after he produced a couple of vital saves. The Spaniard kept out a close-range effort to deny Raul Jimenez late on, while also produced this flying stop to prevent Ruben Neves from adding another to his collection of long-range strikes.

Donkey of the week

After becoming only the fourth ever player to score two own goals in a Premier League game, it’s surely no surprise to see Wout Faes from taking this unwanted award.

Despite the shouts from Danny Ward, the Belgian threw a leg at a tame Trent Alexander-Arnold cross that saw the ball loop up and over his ‘keeper and into the net.

If that wasn’t bad enough, he then completely cocked up his clearance after Darwin Nunez’s shot had come back off the post to gift Liverpool all three points.

Stat of the week

A good first half performance from West Ham wasn’t enough from slipping to a fifth consecutive defeat and leave them only outside the relegation places on goal difference.

That means it’s the worst run of defeats for the Hammers in over five years, while it’s the worst run for manager David Moyes in 17 years.

Quote of the week

Marcus Rashford scored the winner for Manchester United to continue his rich vein of form and propel his side into the top four.

However, the England international had to settle for a place on the bench after being dropped by Erik ten Hag due to ‘disciplinary’ reasons.

The striker later revealed that he has slept in for a team meeting.

“Yeah obviously, it’s team rules, it is a mistake that can happen. Obviously disappointed not to play but I understand the decision.

“I am happy we managed to win the game, I think we can draw a line under it.

“I was a little bit late for a meeting, I slept in, I overslept, it can happen.”

We’ve all been there Marcus.
