Transfer Deadline Day: The deals to watch

Time is running out for Premier League clubs to secure their transfer targets, with the window slamming shut at 11pm on Thursday.

Here are some of the key deals to keep an eye out for on deadline day.

Douglas Luiz

Luiz has entered the final 12 months of his contract at Aston Villa, with a number of clubs hoping for a cut-price deal in the final stages of the summer window.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Atletico Madrid have all been linked with the nine-cap Brazil international, who Steven Gerrard insisted he did not want to lose on Wednesday evening.

However, Gerrard admitted Luiz’s future was perhaps out of his control and that Villa may need to make a business decision on a footballer who has shown no indication that he wants to sign a new deal.

“I am not in control of that. That will be Douglas, his agent and what happens around that. I would like to keep him. I think he is in a fantastic player. I have made that abundantly clear,” Gerrard told the media following the loss to Arsenal.

“We are not in a position where we need to lose our top players but at the same time Douglas has a year to go. It is one of those really touchy situations where the club has to do what is best for the club, not necessarily what is best for me.”

Arthur Melo

Liverpool are understood to be in talks to sign Arthur Melo from Juventus, on a season-long loan deal with no option to buy.

Melo has struggled to live up to expectations since joining Juventus in a €72m deal from Barcelona in 2020 and was linked with Arsenal in January.

Jurgen Klopp is keen to add a midfielder to his squad before the deadline and a deal for Melo looks a low-risk option to boost the Reds’ depleted stocks.

Jordan Henderson sustained a hamstring injury during the 2-1 win over Newcastle on Wednesday and joins Thiago, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on the sidelines.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Chelsea’s deal for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is said to be progressing well, as the west Londoners look to bring the former Arsenal captain back to the Premier League.

Aubameyang is free to leave Barcelona following the arrival of Robert Lewandowski, with Chelsea in the market for a centre-forward following the exits of Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner.

Thomas Tuchel knows the forward well from their time together at Borussia Dortmund and views the 33-year-old – who scored 92 goals in 163 games for Arsenal – as an ideal solution.

Marcos Alonso is expected to sign for Barcelona as part of the deal, should it be finalised before the deadline. Aubameyang will miss the next few weeks however, after sustaining a broken jaw during a violent robbery at his home earlier this week.

Edson Alvarez

Chelsea’s summer spending has shown no signs of slowing, with Edson Alvarez subject of a £43m bid from the west Londoners.

The Mexico international has been targeted as Thomas Tuchel looks to add defensive midfield depth, amid ongoing concerns surrounding N’Golo Kante’s fitness.

Alvarez’s arrival could allow Conor Gallagher to depart on loan, with Newcastle, Everton, West Ham and Crystal Palace all waiting in the wings should he become available.

Reports have suggested Alvarez has refused to train with Ajax following Chelsea’s approach, as he looks to join a mass exodus in Amsterdam that has seen the likes of Sebastien Haller, Antony, Lisandro Martinez and Ryan Gravenberch all depart.

Cody Gakpo

Leeds and Southampton have chased a deal for Cody Gakpo, who was linked with Manchester United earlier in the window.

Both teams have seen approaches rejected for the PSV Eindhoven winger, who was named as Dutch Footballer of the Year in 2021/22 after scoring 21 gals in all competitions.

PSV appear reluctant to allow the 23-year-old to leave at this late stage of the window, though a big-money bid from the Premier League could prove tempting. Gakpo scored a hat-trick as PSV thrashed FC Volendam 7-1 on Wednesday evening.

Daniel James

Tottenham have been among the most active Premier League Clubs this summer, but could add further additions on deadline day.

Daniel James has been linked with a move to North London, as Antonio Conte looks to add depth to his options in the final third.

James signed for Leeds in a £25m deal from Manchester United last summer and is happy at Elland Road, but the prospect of Champions League football could prove tempting.

Leeds are reportedly considering Cody Gako and Rangers winger Ryan Kent as potential replacements.

Leander Dendoncker

Wolves have reportedly received approaches from a number of Premier League clubs for Leander Dendoncker.

Everton, West Ham and Aston Villa are all interested in the versatile midfielder, who can also operate in a more defensive role.

Dendoncker has started two of Wolves four Premier League fixtures this season, but faces increased competition for a place following the signing of Matheus Nunes from Sporting Lisbon.

Sky Sports have claimed Wolves are ’50/50′ about allowing the Belgium international to leave, given the need to find a replacement.

Youri Tielemans

Tielemans is another name who has less than a year on his contract, with the Leicester midfielder having been linked with an exit for much of the summer.

Arsenal have been linked with the Belgium international but are not understood to have made a fresh approach. The Gunners want to sign a midfielder following injuries to Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny.

Leicester allowed Wesley Fofana to leave for Chelsea in a £75m deal on Wednesday and could sanction Tielemans’ exit should a suitable offer arrive. It is believed it would take a fee in the region of £25m-£30m for the Foxes to consider a sale.

The 25-year-old will be free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with foreign sides in January, should he remain at the King Power Stadium.
