I may not be the furthest flying scratch player on the course, but I’ve learned a thing or two about Trilogy’s offerings. And let me tell you, if you’re new to the game and want to start off on the right foot, you can’t go wrong with a starter set from one of these companies: Dynamic Discs, Latitude 64, Westside Discs. But being able to cherry pick the best from each will set you up for longevity.

What should a disc golf bag have in it?

First things first, you’re gonna need a putter. Yeah, yeah, I know, it’s not the sexiest disc out there, but trust me, you’ll be thanking me when you’re sinking those crucial putts. Next up, you’re gonna need a midrange. It’s like the Swiss Army knife of disc golf, it can do a little bit of everything.

Now, let’s talk about fairway drivers. You’re gonna need one that’s a little more forgiving and one that’s a little more “beefy” (whatever the heck that means). And last but not least, you’re gonna need a max-distance driver. Because let’s be real, who doesn’t want to be the person throwing the farthest?

Putter: The Dynamic Discs Judge

The Judge is a popular choice among both new and experienced players. It’s found in many Dynamic Discs starter sets and is also commonly found in professional bags. It’s a beaded, neutral-flying putter with a fairly low-profile design, making it comfortable for new players to grip and throw. The Judge is also available in many different polymers, making it a versatile disc for both putting and approaching.

I bag the Judge and use it as my go-to putter. For shots further than 15-20ft I typically don’t use it. Although other skilled players may like it as an approach disc I prefer something like the Innova Wolf. But, if my shot is under 20ft, and I need a consistent flight, the Dynamic Discs Judge is the one. 

Get it a little on the heavy side to complete the feel of a solid putter. With a low profile and neutral flight, having it a bit heavier will make it feel like you’re just dropping it in the basket. These characteristics should also help against any wind gusts and chain bounce…nothing worse than hitting the chains and seeing your disc somehow deflect off of it.

Midrange: The Latitude 64 Compass

The Compass, AKA the “workhorse” of midrange discs, is the go-to choice for new players who want to pretend they know what they’re doing. It’s not exactly a pro-level disc, but it’s not a total beginner’s toy either. Basically, it’s the straight-flying, middle-of-the-road option for those who can’t make up their minds. Oh, and it’s “designed” by professional player Ricky Wysocki, so you can feel like a pro too, even if you’re not quite there yet.

I’m not going to lie, I don’t pull out my Compass all the time. For me it’s one step up from my DD Judge and therefore doesn’t provide enough of a variance to warrant use. But before I found my go-to midrange the Compass was it. 

My favorite mid-range was mentioned above, the Innova Wolf. But sometimes the Wolf just tends to hang on my hand a bit too long and go off to the right when throwing it backhand. Perhaps this is due to its Thumtrac® technology working a bit too well. If my Wolf acts up a few times in a round I tend to pull out the Compass for a bit of a “reset” session.

Both discs fly straight, but the Wolf gives a lot more turnover to the weaker arm. The Compass on the other hand lets a beginner truly understand the neutrality of a disc flight…you put it on a line and that is how it will fly. In fact, the Compass is a great disc to be used for understanding wrist angle and if perhaps your the reason throws are flying off into the abyss…it’s not the disc .

Fairway Driver: Latitude 64 River

Introducing the River, the disc that’s been causing a splash in the disc golf world for the past decade. It’s not just its tremendous glide that makes it a fan favorite, but also its ability to make even the most average of players feel like a pro. 

The River is the go-to fairway driver for those shots that require a delicate touch and precise control. It’s like a trusty steed, easy to throw, and suitable for players of all abilities. Just give it a little flick of the wrist and watch it soar on those big sweeping anhyzer curves, leaving all your competitors in the dust (and probably a little envious).

The review showcases what it’s like being a newer player and getting a disc that I probably wasn’t ready for but taught me a lot. I now bag two, one in the opto plastic and one in a cheaper burst. I throw the burst if I don’t mind losing it, but throw my opto when it counts. I can’t say enough about how much I like this disc as a fairway option, but have found it works well for hyzer lines when needed. I also love it as a forehand option.

Fairway Driver: Dynamic Discs Felon

Oh, you’re looking for a fairway driver that can handle the wind like a boss? Look no further than the Felon. This bad boy was specifically designed to handle the unforgiving Kansas winds, so you know it’s going to perform in any gusty conditions. 

The Felon feels great in your hand and comes out easy, making it perfect for new players who want to look like pros. And let’s not forget about its predictable hyzer finish, perfect for those low ceiling shots where you need some extra glide and a strong finish. The River is a speed 7, the Felon jumps up to a 9. It’s also a little more stable. So, if you want a disc that will make your bag feel like it’s got a bit more speed to it, grab a Felon. It’ll be love at first throw.

Distance Driver: Westside Discs Sword

Deciding on the best distance driver from the Trilogy lineup was a difficult decision for me. Up here in the mountains, with all these trees and whatnot, a trusty straight-shooter like the Sword is a necessity. I chose the Sword for its reputation as a straight flying disc. As a player, I appreciate the importance of accuracy, especially on wooded courses, and the Sword will have you slicing through the air like a hot knife through butter.

Infinite Discs user MW1998 gives a good review of the Sword:

“The Sword is an interesting disc, but it’s also my favorite driver by far. There are many different plastic types, and I have thrown the three most popular. To preface this, I throw about 360-380ft RHBH.

• VIP AIR: Very under stable, basically a roller for my power. Better for slower arm speeds
• VIP: My favorite and go to plastic. A little bit under stable, flies like it has -1 or -2 turn, with reliable gentle fade. This plastic will turn super hard in headwind.
• VIP X: This plastic is very true to its numbers. It will fly straight with basically no turn, and fade reliably. This is the disc I throw into headwind.

I bag both a VIP and VIP X Sword. I use the VIP sword on almost every tee shot over 300ft. I switch to the VIP X if there is a headwind, or I need more fade. All in all, the sword is my go to driver. I get the most distance, and it feels amazing in the hand. I highly recommend one for everybody.”
