Saudi Arabia’s dealings with WWE are no different from the company’s other controversies. WWE settled a lawsuit in 2021 with investors over hiding the details of their Saudi Arabian deal for $37 million. The company also wanted to hide a lot more.
Due to financial issues, WWE Superstars were reportedly kept in Saudi Arabia for an additional 24 hours after Crown Jewel. These reports were all denied because they were stuck due to mechanical problems.
A few weeks ago, Dave Meltzer reminded fans that WWE took great lengths to prevent all of that information from becoming public record. It cost WWE $37 million in settlements.
As a result of the plaintiffs’ witnesses who were WWE wrestlers who stated that, WWE paid $37 million to settle a lawsuit to keep that out of Discovery. There were probably at least a dozen people I heard from on that one. WWE denied it multiple times, but others said otherwise.
Hundreds of law firms investigated the case, and WWE settled immediately before Discovery for the most money they have ever settled for in their history. You can read the lawsuit yourself to see how quickly they made it disappear.
In case you need a refresher, Dave Meltzer spoke about this on Wrestling Observer Radio in 2020. Two undisclosed witnesses are now involved in a lawsuit, according to Dave Meltzer. WWE Superstars and Saudi Arabian television employees are involved.
The identities of the witnesses remain undisclosed, and the WWE Superstar confirmed the accuracy of reports by others. Before they were due to depart, armed, military-style personnel in all black were seen stationing themselves outside the plane, watching the Superstars and impeding their exit. A stewardess in Saudi Arabia reportedly informed them that someone deliberately sought to stop them from leaving. Moreover, it seemed clear the pilot was extremely troubled when relaying the news that they could not go.
Mark Carrano claimed there was an argument between the Saudi Crown Prince and Vince McMahon during the June 7th Super ShowDown event. Reportedly, McMahon cut the live feed, which angered the Saudi Crown Prince.
Employees described the situation as a potential “hostage situation.” The witness and approximately 12 others took a private chartered flight to Buffalo in order to return in time for SmackDown.
Clearly, WWE was able to settle for a huge payout, and no further information came out in court. Pro wrestling legends will keep these stories tucked away. Maybe a Dark Side of the Ring episode should come out one day, but nobody is talking about it right now.
