Former Liverpool icon and current Sky Sports pundit, Jamie Carragher, has crowned James Maddison of Tottenham Hotspur as his choice for the Premier League Player of the Season thus far. Carragher opted for the English midfielder over Liverpool’s star forward, Mohamed Salah, and Manchester City’s prolific striker, Erling Haaland.

Carragher’s endorsement of Maddison came in the wake of an outstanding performance against Fulham on October 23. The 26-year-old midfielder netted his team’s second goal in the 54th minute, courtesy of an assist from Son Heung-min, who had earlier found the net nine minutes before halftime.

Maddison, who made a £40 million switch from Leicester City to Tottenham during the summer, also exhibited his playmaking prowess by delivering four key passes and triumphing in nine of his 13 duels. He contributed defensively with three tackles and drew four fouls from the opposition.

Tottenham’s victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium propelled Ange Postecoglou’s squad back to the summit of the Premier League table. With seven wins and two draws from nine matches, they have amassed 23 points, affording them a two-point lead over second-placed Manchester City.

Following the match on Monday, Carragher declared Maddison as the standout player of the current Premier League season. He highlighted Maddison’s pivotal role in Spurs’ recent transformation and gave credit to the club’s manager for instilling a new philosophy and style of play.

Carragher remarked, “I think he has been that influential in that change at Spurs. Credit has to go to the manager because it’s philosophy and his style of play, but he’s been a major part of that.”

“He took the number 10, that was Harry Kane ’s shirt, probably the greatest player to play for Tottenham. I think at one stage he had the captain’s armband. He’s just that type of personality and you mention about taking that step up and going to a bigger club.”

The ex-defender, who enjoyed a decorated career with Liverpool, winning the UEFA Champions League, two FA Cups, and three League Cups between 1996 and 2013, emphasized that Maddison’s capability to rise to the occasion hinges on his mentality rather than just his skill.

He acknowledged Maddison’s successful transition to a larger club, emphasizing the mental fortitude that this demands.

Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Gary O’Neil, who was also present on Sky Sports alongside Carragher, concurred with Carragher’s assessment, highlighting Maddison’s remarkable self-belief in his abilities and the unwavering work ethic that underpins his success.

Erling Haaland
