Roma’s Jose Mourinho suspended once more, accuses opposing manager of ‘crying too much’

On Sunday, Roma’s head coach, Jose Mourinho, received a red card for confronting Monza’s manager, Raffaele Palladino, with the words, “You talk a lot and then you cry,” during the final minutes of their match at Stadio Olimpico.

Despite the Monza team playing with only ten players since the first half, Roma narrowly won the game 1-0. Mourinho incited the referee’s intervention by taunting the Monza bench, leading to his expulsion during the ninth minute of added time.

As a consequence of this incident, the Portuguese coach will serve a one-match suspension, causing him to miss Roma’s upcoming clash against his former club, Inter.

This is not the first time Mourinho has faced disciplinary issues during his tenure as Roma’s manager.

Last season, he was ejected from the dugout on three occasions during matches against Cremonese, Torino, and Atalanta, a record exceeding that of any player or manager in Italy’s top-flight league.

He has also accumulated multiple bookings, including one in his team’s recent victory over Cagliari.

After the victory against Monza, Mourinho explained his actions to Sky Sport Italia, stating, “I made some gestures, I said nothing offensive,” and went on to clarify that he reacted due to disrespectful comments made about his team by some less-experienced individuals during the previous season.

He remarked that Monza was the team that sought to pressure the referee on the touchline, while emphasizing that they are a good team that did not deserve to lose that day.

Mourinho also expressed his belief that Monza should not have lost the match and admitted, “I think Monza did not deserve to lose the match. Obviously, I am very happy with the points, but I always felt my team was struggling. We made a lot of technical errors, the players were physically drained after long journeys on international duty.”

It’s worth noting that Mourinho had previously claimed to have worn a microphone on the touchline during Roma’s 1-1 draw against Monza in Serie A in March, citing the need to “protect myself” from the match officials.

He had been highly critical of the 38-year-old referee, Daniele Chiffi, after the game, describing him “He [Chiffi] is the worst referee I have met in my life, he is the worst. Technically he’s horrible. Zero empathy. Zero communication. Zero awareness.”
