Egyptian and Liverpool footballer Mohamed Salah has made a passionate appeal for an end to the “massacres” in Gaza, emphasizing the urgent need for humanitarian aid to enter the besieged Palestinian territory.
The 31-year-old forward, also the captain of Egypt’s national team, expressed his concerns about the deepening Israel-Gaza conflict following a tragic explosion at the al-Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza City, which resulted in the loss of nearly 500 lives.
Palestinian authorities attribute the blast to an Israeli air raid, while Israel claims it was caused by a misfired rocket from the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) armed group, a claim rejected by the PIJ.
Salah, a well-known figure in the Arab world and a Champions League and Premier League winner with Liverpool, used his platform to address the escalating violence and heartbreak in the region, stating, “The escalations in recent weeks is unbearable to witness. All lives are sacred and must be protected. The massacres need to stop, families are being torn apart.”
“What is clear now is that humanitarian aid to Gaza must be allowed immediately. The people there are in terrible conditions,”
“The scenes at the hospital last night were horrifying. The people of Gaza need food, water and medical supplies urgently.”
“I am calling on world leaders to come together to prevent further slaughter of innocent souls – humanity must prevail.”
He had faced criticism for his earlier silence on the Palestinian issue, leading to an online campaign to unfollow him on social media.
Gaza has been under siege since October 7, with a history of violence and conflict between Hamas and Israel. US President Joe Biden visited the region and secured Israel’s agreement to allow aid into Gaza, where there were concerns about dwindling supplies and a looming humanitarian catastrophe.
Egypt also pledged to allow 20 trucks carrying humanitarian aid into Gaza through the Rafah crossing in the southern part of the territory.
