Inter Miami manager Gerardo Martino has officially announced his plans to make a concerted effort to bring striker Luis Suarez to the club, potentially leading to a reunion with Lionel Messi.

Suarez’s initial connection with the Major League Soccer team surfaced during the summer transfer window. However, at that time, he decided to stay with Gremio. In December 2022, Suarez initially signed with the Brazilian club, agreeing to a two-year contract.

Nonetheless, in July of the current year, Suarez disclosed his intention to end his stay in Brazil prematurely by 12 months. It was subsequently revealed that the former Barcelona and Liverpool striker would be departing Gremio at the conclusion of the current season in Brazil, set for this coming December.

Following this departure, Suarez will become a free agent, free to join a new club. Now, Martino has affirmed that Suarez is part of his plans for the 2024 MLS season.

Martino stated during a press conference via Goal, “Within our analysis of the upcoming season, and the needs we may have, we have an analysis with Luis and an analysis without Luis.”

“So when the moment arrives to make Suarez’s situation with respect to Inter Miami official, we’ll be prepared to go in the corresponding direction.”

It’s worth noting that Martino served as Barcelona’s manager during the 2013-14 season, where he had the opportunity to coach Messi during his tenure at the Camp Nou. Notably, Martino’s tenure at the La Liga club preceded Suarez’s arrival through a £75 million ($91 million) transfer from Liverpool.

During Suarez’s stint at Barcelona, he forged a formidable partnership with Messi and Neymar, contributing 195 goals in 283 appearances and securing an impressive total of 13 major trophies, including a Champions League title and four La Liga championships.

Miami welcomed Messi in the summer, marking the first arrival of a former Barcelona star at the club. Martino later joined as manager, followed by ex-Barcelona teammates Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba at the DRV PNK Stadium.

The MLS transfer window is scheduled to open in late January or early February of the upcoming year. If Suarez departs from Gremio at the end of December, he would be eligible to join Miami as a free agent.

Suarez, who is now 36 years old, has recorded 18 goals in 42 appearances since his signing with Gremio last year. A potential move by Miami to secure Suarez would result in the Uruguayan international reuniting with Messi, their last collaboration dating back to 2020 prior to Suarez’s departure from Barcelona.
