Reportedly, Mason Greenwood has received notification that his future at Manchester United has been definitively ruled out, regardless of his performance for Getafe.

The one-time England international was loaned out to La Liga after a suspension lasting over 18 months by the club. The 22-year-old Greenwood faced legal issues, having been arrested in January 2022 and charged with attempted rape, coercive control, and assault causing actual bodily harm in October of the same year. However, all charges against him were dropped in February 2023, and the club concluded its internal investigation at the beginning of the current season.

It was previously suggested that Greenwood’s time at United had come to an end, but it now appears that this decision has been officially confirmed by the higher-ups at Old Trafford. Despite his departure from his childhood club, there may have been a glimmer of hope in Greenwood that he could salvage his career at United.

Currently on loan in Madrid until the end of the season, Greenwood does have a recall clause in his contract, which could potentially bring him back to Manchester United as early as this winter if the club desires. However, the likelihood of Greenwood making another appearance for United seems slimmer than ever. His last game for the club dates back to January 2022, just before his initial arrest when online images and audio clips allegedly showed him mistreating a female partner.

An investigation by The Athletic had indicated that United’s CEO, Richard Arnold, had intended to reintegrate Greenwood into Erik ten Hag’s plans for the season. However, it seems that the club reversed this decision after public outrage following the leaked information.

There had been talk of a potential return to Old Trafford after Greenwood scored his first goal in La Liga, with notable contributions such as an assist against Athletic Club. However, any hopes of a Premier League return with United seem to have evaporated. It’s uncertain whether any other English Premier League team would consider buying him out of his contract with Old Trafford.

Greenwood is currently under contract with United until the summer of 2025, having signed a four-year deal with the club in 2021. He has accumulated 35 goals in 129 senior appearances for the Red Devils, having risen to prominence as a first-team player in 2018.

Nonetheless, it appears highly likely that these statistics will mark the end of his contributions, as his standing in Manchester appears irreparable. United will have the task of finding a buyer for Greenwood if they intend to sell him next summer, with hopes that his loan period in Spain will generate interest among potential suitors.
