Manchester United takeover turmoil: Glazers refuse to yield more than 25% to Sir Jim Ratcliffe

For Manchester United supporters, it appears that the ongoing nightmare has no end in sight.

In November 2022, many fans hurried to the off-licence, throwing spontaneous celebrations upon hearing the Glazers’ intentions to sell the club. However, the repercussions of those hangovers have stretched for nearly a year now.

Regrettably, the latest development offers no relief, as the sole potential buyer for Manchester United, Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani, seems to have grown weary of prolonged negotiations. The Glazers have held out for a figure closer to £8 billion, rather than accepting his £5 billion bid.

This is undoubtedly not the news supporters had been hoping for, but can we really blame them? The Florida-based billionaires are not holding onto Manchester United for the prestige or trophies, both of which have been scarce in the last decade. Instead, the Glazers remain invested because, despite the club’s lack of success since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, it continues to generate substantial revenue.

The Glazers are experts at capitalizing on this cash cow, having initially acquired United for £790 million in 2005. Presently, the club carries a debt of £969 million, a combination of gross debt, bank loans, and outstanding transfer fees with associated payments.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has expressed interest in purchasing a minority stake in United, approximately 25 percent for £1.3 billion. Nonetheless, the Glazers’ control over this iconic football institution remains unwavering.

Protests and public animosity seem incapable of weakening their grip, as the Glazers exhibit a level of resilience and indifference that few can match. It has contributed to their substantial wealth.

Make no mistake, the Glazers are well aware of the extent of their unpopularity and the disdain directed toward them. Just last week, Manchester United’s CEO, Richard Arnold, informed a Fans Forum that the club maintains transparency in its communication with the owners.

Arnold might now need to convey the very real possibility of renewed demonstrations in Manchester to the Glazers across the Atlantic. Supporters are undoubtedly furious, but, as history has shown, it will be Arnold and his senior colleagues who must manage the aftermath of this disappointing news.

Meanwhile, over 4,000 miles away in the Sunshine State, the Glazers continue to enjoy the warmth provided by their bulging bank accounts. This situation has persisted for a long time.

Erik ten Hag’s team currently languishes in 10th place in the Premier League, eliminated from the title race even before Halloween, and having suffered defeats in both of their Champions League matches this season. In essence, the Glazers have a team that reflects the ramifications of their questionable and self-serving ownership.”
