Erik Ten Hag’s verdict on Scott McTominay transfer after Manchester United’s £30m deal falls through

Manchester United has decided not to permit Scott Mctominay to depart from Old Trafford in January. Erik ten Hag believes that the midfielder will play a pivotal role in this season’s campaign.

Despite starting in only two of Manchester United’s 11 matches across various competitions this season and being an unused substitute five times, McTominay found himself pushed down the pecking order due to the arrivals of Mason Mount and Sofyan Amrabat during the summer transfer window.

Clubs like West Ham and Newcastle have been monitoring his situation, with West Ham even submitting a £30 million bid for the 26-year-old, which was rejected by Manchester United.

Although there were suggestions that the club might cash in on their academy graduate, McTominay stayed at United. However, his limited first-team action hinted at the possibility of a future move.

Despite McTominay’s peripheral role in United’s first team this season, Ten Hag has been impressed by his dedication in training and sees him as a valuable addition to the squad. The midfielder remains committed to Manchester United, and his preference is to compete for a place in the starting lineup.

McTominay recently made a remarkable impact for United in their game against Brentford. As a late substitute when United was trailing 1-0 at Old Trafford, he scored two goals deep into stoppage time, completely turning the game around in a sensational cameo appearance, during which he had only four touches on the pitch.

This was not the first time McTominay showcased his goal-scoring ability, as he has now scored over 20 goals for United and has also been in excellent form for the Scotland national team, with six goals in six appearances this calendar year, including a disallowed free-kick against Spain.

McTominay’s contract with Old Trafford runs until the summer of 2025, with an option for the club to extend it by another year. It seems that he will remain at Manchester United for at least the remainder of this season.

Ten Hag has faced numerous injuries to his squad this season, particularly in defense, and has also had to cope with injuries to new signings Amrabat and Mount, as well as youngster Kobbie Mainoo, who has been sidelined due to injury. The United manager is aware that his squad has been stretched to its limits and is unwilling to approve McTominay’s departure.
