Sandro Tonali and Nicolò Zaniolo, who are Italian international players, departed from the Azzuri’s training center on Thursday following notification of their involvement in an investigation by Turin prosecutors, as confirmed by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC).

Both players, who represent Newcastle and Aston Villa respectively, were informed of the inquiry while they were at the national team’s training facility in Coverciano, just ahead of the European Championship qualifiers against Malta and England.

Although the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) did not disclose the specific nature of the investigation, they did mention that the two midfielders were permitted to return home due to their current condition not being suitable for upcoming matches.

In a statement released on Thursday, FIGC stated, “The federation announces that this afternoon the Turin Public Prosecutor’s Office has conducted investigations into players, Sandro Tonali and Nicolo Zaniolo, who are currently training with the national team at the Coverciano Federal Training Centre.”

“Regardless of the nature of the events, considering that the two players are not in the necessary condition to face the matches scheduled for the next few days, the federation has decided, also for their protection, to allow them to return to their respective clubs.”

Turin prosecutors had revealed on Wednesday that they were conducting an investigation into another Italian footballer, Nicolò Fagioli, for alleged involvement in illegal betting activities. Fagioli is also facing a concurrent investigation by FIGC prosecutors to ascertain whether his alleged gambling activities were related to football matches.

Sandro Tonali made a transfer to Newcastle from Milan in July for an undisclosed fee, believed to be around £55 million, while Nicolò Zaniolo joined Villa on loan from Galatasaray in August.
