Wayne Rooney takes over as Birmingham manager, inspired by NFL icon Tom Brady’s persuasion to return to England

The former Manchester United icon, Wayne Rooney, steps into the managerial role at St Andrews, taking over from John Eustace, who was relieved of his duties earlier today.

Tom Brady, the co-owner of Birmingham and an NFL legend, engaged in ongoing discussions with Rooney in recent weeks regarding the managerial position.

Brady, a sporting icon, is optimistic about attracting prominent talents to the Birmingham Blues and guiding them back to the Premier League.

To support this endeavor, he has enlisted Ashley Cole and former Manchester United teammate John O’Shea as coaches.

Both will maintain their coaching roles in their respective national teams, with Cole serving as England’s Under-21 assistant coach and O’Shea as the assistant coach for the Republic of Ireland.

Rooney’s debut match as manager will pit him against another former Red Devils colleague, Michael Carrick, who manages Middlesbrough.

The 37-year-old is set to lead his first training session tomorrow. In an official statement, Birmingham announced, “Birmingham City Football Club is delighted to announce the appointment of Wayne Rooney as Manager, agreeing terms on a three-and-a-half-year contract.”

Garry Cook, Birmingham’s chief executive, is renowned for his attempted acquisition of Rooney for Manchester City from Manchester United in 2010. Now, 13 years later, Cook has finally secured Rooney, albeit in a different capacity.

Rooney expressed his delight at the appointment, stating, “I am absolutely delighted to be joining Birmingham City Football Club at such an exciting time.”

“It is very clear that they have a plan and are committed to realising their ambition for the club. We are fully aligned on what is expected.”

“I have been building my managerial career, putting myself in challenging environments, to get me ready for this opportunity.”

“It’s a project that gives me a sense of purpose and I can’t wait to get started.”

Cook also conveyed his excitement about Rooney’s arrival. Fans eagerly await Rooney’s inaugural starting lineup at St. Andrews and how the team may evolve in the upcoming transfer windows.

Rooney embarked on his managerial journey in the Championship with Derby County. When he assumed the role at Pride Park in November 2020, Derby languished at the bottom of the table.

Nevertheless, under his guidance, they managed to avoid relegation at the end of the season.

Rooney stepped down at the conclusion of the subsequent campaign, as Derby suffered relegation to League One, subsequently joining MLS side DC United.

During his tenure with the Washington-based team, Rooney led them through 52 matches, securing only 13 victories while enduring 26 defeats.
