Wayne Rooney’s potential Birmingham contract falls far short of his Manchester United playing days income

According to reports, Birmingham City is prepared to dig deep into their resources to offer Wayne Rooney the most enticing deal possible to make him their new manager.

However, despite being the expected successor to the recently sacked manager John Eustace, Rooney’s prospective earnings will still be significantly lower than what he was accustomed to during his time at Manchester United.

Rooney, who recently became a free agent after parting ways with Major League Soccer side D.C. United, is widely anticipated to return to his homeland, England.

It appears that St. Andrew’s is likely to be his next destination, as there is a growing number of reports suggesting that Blues co-owner Tom Brady is enthusiastic about Rooney taking the helm.

Nevertheless, the former all-time top scorer for England will receive less than 10% of the colossal salary he once commanded at Old Trafford.

During the peak of his career, the Liverpool native earned a staggering £300,000 per week at United, equivalent to slightly over £15.5 million annually.

At that time, he was the highest-paid player at Manchester United, although such figures have since become more commonplace at the club.

However, The Sun has reported that Birmingham, a Championship team, has proposed a salary of £1.5 million to Rooney to lead the club’s quest for promotion.

This offer translates to roughly £29,000 per week, which is nearly double the reported £830,000 per year (£16,000 per week) he earned in Washington.

It’s also more than three times the £9,000 per week that Eustace was earning before his recent dismissal.

The decision to part ways with Eustace faced criticism from many fans of the club, as Birmingham was sitting in sixth place in the Championship and on a two-game winning streak.

However, Rooney’s availability following his absence from the MLS Cup playoffs might be too good of an opportunity to pass up. The former striker’s previous managerial experience in England was a two-season stint at Derby County, which concluded with the club’s relegation to League One amidst significant financial challenges.

Rooney stated, “It’s the right time [to leave],” upon confirming his departure from D.C. United. “I’ve done everything I can to get this club into the play-offs. It’s not a single thing that’s happened. It’s about timing.”

Reportedly, former teammates Ashley Cole and John O’Shea are expected to be part of Rooney’s coaching staff if he takes charge at St. Andrew’s.

Former England colleague Cole last worked under Frank Lampard at Everton, while ex-United squad-mate O’Shea currently serves as an assistant to Stephen Kenny with the Republic of Ireland.
