The legal representatives of a woman who accused Cristiano Ronaldo of sexual assault have brought the footballer to court once again, aiming to secure a significantly larger sum of hush money.
Kathryn Mayorga, who chose to reveal her identity after alleging that Ronaldo had sexually assaulted her in a Las Vegas hotel room in 2009, received a £275,000 payment in exchange for her silence, following vehement denials of the allegations by the Portuguese player.
Ronaldo’s legal team returned to court recently to continue their legal dispute with Mayorga’s attorneys, who are pursuing an effort to compel the Al-Nassr soccer star to provide her with a much larger financial settlement.
In June 2022, US District Judge Jennifer Dorsey dismissed their lawsuit seeking a higher payout, citing the use of stolen confidential documents by one of Mayorga’s lawyers. Now, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit has been petitioned to reverse this dismissal and reopen the civil lawsuit that Mayorga initially initiated in Nevada back in 2018.
Mayorga’s legal team will argue that their prior attempts to include the confidentiality agreement she signed in 2010, after accepting hush money from the footballer, were consistently and erroneously rejected by the federal judge.
Despite becoming the highest-paid footballer in history following his £177 million per year contract with the Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr in January, Ronaldo has consistently denied the allegations of sexual assault.
