FIFA World Cup 2030 across three continents

In a remarkable agreement orchestrated by Fifa President Gianni Infantino, the initial three matches of the Tournament are set to take place in South America.

This arrangement will kick off with the first match in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, followed by Buenos Aires, Argentina, hosting the second game, and the third fixture being held in Asuncion, Paraguay.

Following these matches, the six participating teams will embark on a transatlantic journey, with the remainder of the tournament shared among Morocco, Portugal, and Spain.

England might be among the teams involved, which would entail a roughly 6,500-mile trip to South America for their opening match. Subsequently, they would have to cover the same distance in their return journey to Europe and Africa for their remaining group stage games, which could be held in Spain, Portugal, or Morocco.

This groundbreaking agreement was announced on X, formerly known as Twitter, by Alejandro Dominguez, the head of South American football. Dominguez stated, “We aimed high and dreamed big. “The 2030 Centenario World Cup starts where it all began.”

“The host of the opening matches of the Centenario World Cup will be Uruguay, Paraguay and Argentina.”

As a result, the much-anticipated 101 games of the 48-team tournament are slated to take place in Europe and North Africa, with the final expected to be held at Real Madrid’s Bernabeu stadium.

The unprecedented accord received the approval of FIFA’s governing Council during its recent meeting and is scheduled to be officially confirmed at the annual Congress in Zurich at the end of next year.

Uruguay previously hosted the inaugural World Cup in 1930, which they won. Argentina’s last hosting of the tournament was in 1978, while Spain held that honour in 1982.

Morocco will become the second African nation to host the tournament, following in the footsteps of South Africa, which hosted it in 2010. Portugal, on the other hand, has never hosted the tournament.

Today’s announcement leaves the possibility open for Saudi Arabia to host the 2034 tournament, which would likely be another Winter World Cup.

Australia is also considered a potential bidder for the 2034 World Cup. Saudi Arabia has officially expressed its intent to bid for the 2034 World Cup.

This unexpected development, expected to be formally announced by FIFA in the coming hours, underscores Infantino’s ability to shape the future of global football.
