Antony’s return to training did not secure him a spot in Manchester United’s lineup against Crystal Palace despite police inquiry

Earlier today, Manchester United announced that their Brazilian star, valued at £85 million, would be returning to training after a prearranged absence.

Manager Erik Ten Hag expressed confidence that the situation wouldn’t be a distraction, and the focus would remain on the upcoming matches. He confirmed that Antony would rejoin training on Saturday.

Antony voluntarily participated in a police interview in response to allegations of assault made by his ex-partner, Gabriela Cavallin.

Police in both Manchester and Sao Paulo are currently investigating the matter, and he was excluded from the Brazil national team for their World Cup qualifiers this month.

Reports from Brazil suggest that Gabriela informed the police that Antony, who earns £150,000 per week, assaulted her on four separate occasions.

She initially claimed that the first assault took place in June 2022 while she was pregnant and on vacation in Brazil.

In January, she alleged that Antony had headbutted and punched her in a Manchester hotel, resulting in damage to a breast implant. In May, she claimed that he threw a glass at her, causing an injury to her finger.

In a statement, Manchester United confirmed that the £85 million winger would return to training at Carrington.

However, Antony was not allowed to participate in training today or in the match against Crystal Palace.

The club emphasized their commitment to cooperating with the ongoing police inquiries in both Brazil and the UK and asserted that Antony would be available for selection while the investigations continue, with the situation being continually reviewed.

Manchester United strongly condemned acts of violence and abuse, recognizing the importance of safeguarding all parties involved and acknowledging the impact of such allegations on survivors of abuse.

Antony, who has made 31 appearances for Manchester United since the alleged incidents, has denied any wrongdoing and is determined to clear his name.

This announcement followed Antony’s exit from a Manchester police station after a five-hour interrogation by law enforcement. He had arrived in Manchester from Sao Paulo and proactively reached out to Greater Manchester Police to assist with their investigations, including providing access to his phone.

Gabriela Cavallin had previously called for Antony’s removal from the squad, stating her disappointment that he continued to play while under investigation. She emphasized the need for action to be taken given the seriousness of the allegations.

Earlier this month, Antony was granted an indefinite leave of absence from Manchester United, with the club clarifying that he had not been suspended and would continue to receive full pay during his absence from Old Trafford.
