Jose Mourinho confesses AS Roma’s kickoff is it’s and Jose’s “worst” ever start and yet discovers a way to Flex

Jose Mourinho, despite acknowledging his team’s “worst start” of the season, has managed to find a way to showcase his career accomplishments. As the pressure mounts on him with Roma struggling in Serie A, currently sitting in 16th place with just one win in their first six games, Mourinho responded to calls for his resignation by highlighting his previous achievements in guiding Italian teams to European finals.

After a disappointing 4-1 loss to Genoa, Mourinho defended his track record by drawing comparisons between his past successes and Roma’s current situation. He emphasized that despite Roma’s poorest start to a season since the adoption of the three-point system in 1994, he had led the team to consecutive European finals. This included winning the Conference League in the 2021-22 season and reaching the Europa League final against Sevilla.

In a manner reminiscent of his time as the manager of Manchester United, Mourinho confidently stated to the Express, “It is the worst start of my career too. However, I also think it is the first time that Roma have played two European finals in a row.”

Mourinho has always been known for defending his achievements and spotlighting his past triumphs. During his post-match interview with DAZN, the former Real Madrid and Chelsea boss chose to engage only with the pitch-side reporter, opting not to speak with the studio guests. He explained this decision by stating that he hadn’t spoken to the players after their poor performance, and therefore, he didn’t feel inclined to delve into the game in detail or answer further questions.

Mourinho has encountered difficulties in his third season at previous clubs, experiencing sackings at Chelsea during two separate spells and at Manchester United. However, he attributes Roma’s current struggles to a series of injuries, including the absence of former Manchester United player Chris Smalling.

According to Mourinho, Smalling’s absence has impacted the team’s defensive stability and performance. He stated, “It is true. I don’t want to say many things, but people talked about the Roger Ibanez errors that became almost iconic in the big games, but the truth is he gave us incredible solidity. “We lost Chris Smalling, you can see how many games we won without Chris. When we are missing those players, we lack solidity.”

“However, to say we lost the solidity because we are missing this or that player is not fair either. Solidity is also the consequence of team spirit and collective work to track back. We have lost some of that.”

“At the moment, every shot we allow is a goal. That is nothing against Rui, it is just the situation we are seeing. Torino had a Duvan Zapata header in the first minute then never got near us until the equaliser on a throw-in. I feel this from the touchline and I imagine the players feel that anxiety on the pitch too.”
