The speculation and uncertainty surrounding Mohamed Salah’s future finally came to an end in 2022 when he signed a new contract, extending his tenure with the club until 2025.
This resolution followed a period of uncertainty marked by discussions about Salah’s salary demands, cryptic messages from his agent Ramy Abbas, and interviews with the Spanish press that added fuel to the fire.
While the process may have felt protracted, the ultimate outcome was inevitable, though it did not deter interest from Saudi Arabian clubs in subsequent summers.
Now, these contract negotiations have become the focus of a case study at Harvard Business School, where Salah and Abbas are openly sharing insights, with the cooperation of Liverpool Football Club.
Harvard Business School holds a prestigious reputation worldwide, and Salah revealed this news on his Instagram shortly after Liverpool’s 3-1 victory. Any lengthy social media post is bound to quicken the heart rate, but the post’s content was meant to announce that Salah’s contract negotiations from 2022 are now a subject of academic study.
Anita Elberse, a professor at Harvard Business School, and Taher El Moataz Bellah, an MBA student and writer, collaborated on this piece, which delves into the intricacies of the contract extension process.
The study raises numerous questions, including whether Abbas and Salah were justified in pressing Liverpool for a better deal, even though Salah, who was about to turn 30, was already among the highest-paid players globally.
The evidence strongly suggests that they were justified, as Salah’s terms reportedly amount to around £350,000 per week.
Obtaining the full case study would be intriguing, especially since Elberse plans to discuss it in upcoming MBA classes at Harvard.
Not many footballers can claim that their contract negotiations have garnered such interest, but Salah is far from an ordinary footballer.
