Jonny Evans provides exclusive backing for Andre Onana, evoking David De Gea comparison

In an exclusive conversation with TNT Sports, Jonny Evans suggests that Andre Onana can draw motivation from David de Gea, the player he succeeded at Manchester United, as the Cameroonian goalkeeper aims to bounce back from a challenging start to his Old Trafford career. Onana arrived at United in a £47.2 million transfer during the summer but has faced considerable scrutiny following several notable errors in his initial appearances, including conceding the opening goal in The Red Devils’ 4-3 Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich.

Reflecting on this mistake, Onana spoke with TNT Sports and remarked,  “Because of me we didn’t win but we just have to move on. This is the life of the goalkeeper.”

However, Evans, who also shared his thoughts with TNT Sports ahead of United’s upcoming match against Burnley, which you can watch live on TNT Sports and discovery+, believes that Onana may have been too critical of himself regarding the incident.

The defender, who returned to United during the summer transfer window, pointed out the parallel with David de Gea, who also faced difficulties when he first arrived in England from Atletico Madrid in 2011. However, De Gea went on to become an iconic figure at the club over the next 12 years before departing.

Evans commented on Onana’s decision to speak to the press in Munich, stating, “It’s a big thing for him to do that.”

“He didn’t have to do that. But I think it’s very difficult for any player coming to a new club to hit the ground running and maybe he’s been a bit harsh on himself.”

“I’ve seen that quite a lot. And I’ve experienced that myself.”
“He’s replacing David de Gea, who was here for a long time. Again, remember, David at the start of his career at Manchester United, maybe went through a bit of a tough time to settle in and we saw what sort of career he would go on to have for this club.”

Having risen through the ranks as an academy product, Evans made his league debut for United in 2008 and spent the following seven years at the club, contributing to three Premier League title victories before moving to West Brom and subsequently Leicester. After training with United during the summer post his departure from Leicester, he signed a short-term contract and has made one appearance as a substitute in the current season.

The defeat to Bayern marked United’s third consecutive loss, following Premier League defeats against Arsenal and Brighton. Their next challenge is an away trip to Turf Moor to face Burnley in the Premier League, a game that can be viewed live on TNT Sports. As they prepare for the weekend fixtures, United currently occupies the 13th position in the Premier League standings. Evans, however, believes that the team can find positives in their attacking performance against Munich as they strive to climb the league table.

“Bayern Munich is probably the toughest game in the group, especially away for the first match,” the Northern Irishman said.
“We knew it was going to be a tough group and a tough match. I suppose it’s quite difficult to analyse [the match] with the first goal, then getting back into the game after that, [and then] them getting a penalty almost straight after that.”
“The two times we did kind of get back in the game Bayern Munich scored quite quick after.”
“Like I say, it’s quite difficult to analyse from that perspective, but scoring three goals away in Germany, I suppose, is a big positive.”
