Newcastle supporter attacked by Gang of Eight in Milan, sustaining three stab wounds

A Newcastle fan found himself rushed to the hospital on Monday after being subjected to a distressing ordeal, enduring “three stabbings” at the hands of a “gang of troublemakers.” This unfortunate incident occurred just ahead of the Magpies’ much-anticipated Champions League clash with AC Milan.

Reports suggest that a group of “seven or eight” individuals, all concealed in hooded attire, launched an attack on Eddie McKay, a 58-year-old British supporter, during the midnight hours in Italy. The assault is believed to have taken place as McKay was strolling through the central district of Navigili, accompanied by his son and a friend.

Fortunately, local law enforcement intervened, rescuing McKay and swiftly transporting him to the hospital. Recent updates indicate that he is “recovering” and may even be released as early as Tuesday. Medical reports highlight that McKay’s back and arm bore the brunt of the injuries sustained during this violent encounter, with particular concern directed towards his back.

Notably, nothing was taken from the victim during the assault. This unfortunate incident occurred as a group of supporters were returning to their hotel, having departed from an area where visiting fans had gathered on Monday. Over 5,000 devoted Magpies fans made the journey to Milan, eagerly awaiting Tuesday’s fixture—a momentous occasion marking Newcastle’s return to the Champions League after two decades.

In response to these distressing events, a statement from Newcastle expressed deep concern and confirmed their collaboration with local authorities to comprehend the circumstances. The club extended their thoughts to the victim and their family, wishing for a complete and swift recovery.

Fortunately, other Newcastle supporters who were part of the same group as the victim are reported to be “fine” following the stabbing. A circulating image appeared to capture a fan being transferred into an ambulance on a stretcher, while another shirtless supporter looked on.

Videos and footage have emerged depicting traveling fans enjoying themselves in Milan, the fashion capital of Italy, in anticipation of this historic day for the club. Throngs of loyal Newcastle supporters can be seen singing, congregating in bars, pubs, and restaurants, with some even climbing onto tables to celebrate the occasion.

The motive behind the attack on Monday remains shrouded in mystery. Regrettably, this incident is not the first time that a supporter of an English club has been targeted in Italy. In February 2001, six Liverpool supporters were stabbed by individuals associated with Roma ahead of a UEFA Cup clash between the two clubs.

Additionally, it has been five years since Liverpool fan Sean Cox fell into a coma after an attack by a Roma supporter outside Anfield during the 2018 Champions League semi-finals. Cox was unable to return home until two years after the assault, and as of April 2023, reports indicated that he has been “relearning how to walk.”
