Norwich soccer player imprisoned for 12 months for sports car crash into camper van

Norwich City footballer Flynn Clarke has been sentenced to a 12-month prison term following his involvement in a collision that left six individuals injured.

On April 30, 2022, Clarke, aged 20, was driving a black BMW sports car when he collided head-on with a camper van on the A47 westbound. Subsequently, another car collided with the rear of the camper van.

In the incident, Clarke, who is a Scotland U21 international, sustained minor injuries, as did two 19-year-old male passengers who were in his vehicle. However, two other 19-year-old men, seated in the back of Clarke’s car, sustained serious injuries.

The driver of the van, a 59-year-old man, also suffered serious injuries, while his front seat passenger, a 60-year-old woman, sustained minor injuries.

A witness reported that Clarke had been driving recklessly before the accident, weaving in and out of lanes, with the occupants of his car appearing distracted.

Furthermore, nitrous oxide canisters, commonly known as “hippy crack,” were discovered in the BMW. Investigations found no issues with the vehicles or road surface, and weather conditions were deemed favorable for driving.

Clarke, who had recently joined National League side Dagenham & Redbridge on loan from Norwich at the time of the incident, was sentenced at Peterborough Crown Court on Friday. He had previously pleaded guilty to three counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and received a 30-month driving disqualification.

PC Alex Thomas, a member of the Road Policing Unit, commented, “Clarke drove incredibly stupidly that day and caused an unnecessary crash that left six people with injuries, including four of his friends. The outcome could have been much worse”

“I hope he has learnt a lesson by seeing the consequences of driving so dangerously.”

Before his transfer to Norwich for an undisclosed fee in 2021, Clarke made 11 appearances for Peterborough United’s first team, progressing through the club’s youth ranks. He spent the previous season on loan at Walsall before joining the Daggers in September.
