In September 2022, Mathias Pogba, the brother of Paul Pogba, was charged and detained for three months in connection with an alleged extortion plot aimed at extracting £11 million from the Juventus star.

Mathias made a series of video allegations against his brother, while a criminal group demanded the money from Paul Pogba under the guise of “protection services.” While on international duty with the French national team in Paris, Paul Pogba paid approximately £100,000 to mitigate threats from armed individuals at an apartment.

Paul Pogba testified in the extortion case in April and acknowledged that the entire episode had a significant impact on his mental and physical well-being. During the 2022-23 season, Pogba was sidelined for nearly the entire campaign due to injury, but he returned to Juventus for a second stint after his contract with Manchester United expired.

Under Massimiliano Allegri’s leadership, Pogba rejoined the squad for pre-season and played in two Serie A matches at the beginning of the new season. However, he sustained a back injury and had to be substituted after 67 minutes in a 2-0 victory over Empoli on September 3. It remains uncertain if he will face another period of absence from the game.

“Money changes people. … It can break up a family. It can create a war,” said Pogba. “Sometimes I was just by myself thinking, ‘I don’t want to have money anymore. I just don’t want to play anymore. I just want to be with normal people, so they will love me for me – not for the fame, not for the money.’ Sometimes it’s tough.”
