NIGHTMARE! Former Premier League star Martin Grainger became a train driver

Grainger, 49, began his career in 1989 at Colchester United and rose through the non-league ranks to the Premier League. In the 1991–92 season, he assisted The U’s in getting promoted to the Football League.

He joined Brentford, then in Division One, in 1993, and quickly made a name for himself in the first squad. In 1996, he moved to Championship Birmingham, where he would go on to become a cult hero and inspirational figure famed for his skill from set pieces.

He contributed to the team’s 2001 League Cup semifinal appearance and their 2002 Premier League promotion.

Nevertheless, injury limited his playing career after promotion to the Premier League, and he wound up on loan to Midlands rivals Coventry City. Before going back to Birmingham, the left-back made just seven appearances for Coventry City.

He participated in four more games for the St. Andrews, and in his final contest wearing a Blues jersey, he scored a goal against Manchester United. Grainger led non-league Cheshunt in Hertfordshire for a while after retiring in 2004.

He was a chauffeur for VIPs as well. But, he has subsequently discovered a second career as a Train Driver on the London subway system. Grainger, who is currently undergoing training to become a train driver, spoke to Birmingham Live about his choice to do so after learning about it from a friend on his snooker team.

He said:

“At the moment I am a trainee train driver which means you are in a class room for a year and I can only describe it as an absolute nightmare. It is very hard! I must admit, I am not a classroom person and it is quite tough. I am enjoying it and the rewards at the end of it are really good.
