Luka Modric accused of perjury: why he risks 5 years in jail

The fact is from 2017, and the narrative is not entirely clear. In that incident, Luka Modric provided testimony in a trial against three former Dinamo Zagreb managers and a tax official who were being held on considerably more serious allegations of tax evasion and money laundering. The move of defender Lovren to Lyon in 2010 and the transfer of midfielder Modric from Dinamo to Tottenham, respectively, would have been the event.

Modric was required to make a declaration when he signed the documents governing the distribution of remuneration each time he renewed his professional contract and again after he was transferred. The Real Madrid midfielder willfully gave a false declaration, though, according to the Osijek prosecutor’s office. Such signatures wouldn’t have been added until after the 2018 Ballon d’Or winner had already left the organization, at least in the prosecutor’s estimation.

The managers were indeed found guilty at the end of the trial. A real plenipotentiary of Croatian football for many years, Zdravko Mamic, the general manager of Dinamo at the time, was found guilty of stealing 15.5 million euros and given a six-year sentence. Nevertheless, he fled to Bosnia in the meantime to escape the repercussions of the trial against him.
