Train cleaner, 80, who’s been doing his job for 25 years says he nonetheless loves it and has NO plans to retire

An 80-year-old practice cleaner who has been working at Carmarthen station for 25 years says he nonetheless loves his job.

William Gwyn Thomas, who was a dairy farmer in Lampeter, Ceredigion, works with a staff to scrub anyplace between 18 and 26 carriages an evening. 

He works difficult shifts till the early hours of the morning – and says he loves his job.

And in line with Gwyn, as he prefers to be recognized, he has no plans to retire simply but.

He stated: ‘I did not count on I’d nonetheless be working at 80.

‘But I actually like it, and I’ll end when I’m prepared and after I really feel I am unable to do it as effectively.’

Gwyn, who has three kids, three grandchildren and 4 nice grandchildren, has described moderation as being the important thing to life.

He credit his lengthy working life to ‘consuming effectively, not consuming something stronger than a shandy and slicing down on smoking’.

Gwyn, who joined the practice cleansing staff within the late Nineties, works from 19:30 to 02:30 every shift. 

Saturdays have been described because the worst shift.

This is due to the bogs being left in a state which has been referred to as ‘difficult’ by Transport for Wales (TfW).

The staff, together with Gwyn, clear every carriage from prime to backside, together with the cabs, bogs, tables and flooring.

Gywn says he takes the extra ‘difficult’ jobs like cleansing bogs in his stride, as he ‘simply has to get on with’ his job

He stated: ‘It’s annoying however there is not any level moaning about it as a result of that is the job and we simply must get on with it.

‘Someone has to get it trying good for patrons once more.’    

According to TfW’s cleansing supervisor Wendy Jones and Carmarthen station supervisor James Nicholas, wished Gwyn a cheerful eightieth birthday.

They described him as ‘a real instance’ to everybody at work, and ‘a part of the material of Carmarthen’. 

They added: ‘The commonplace of labor Gwyn places in evening after evening is a real instance to us all on how to take pride in your work’.
