PAK Vs AFG: Waqar Younis’ Controversial Statement After Pakistan’s Loss Against Australia, Is He More Aussie Than Pakistani?

After Pakistan’s second consecutive loss in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, this time at the hands of Australia in a match held at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, a remark made by legendary Pakistani cricketer Waqar Younis during the post-match show caught the attention of cricket enthusiasts worldwide. The defeat against Australia came right on the heels of their loss to arch-rivals India last week, leaving Pakistan with a mixed record of two wins and two losses in the tournament.

Following Pakistan’s 62-run loss to Australia, Waqar Younis found himself in the post-match show alongside two former Australian World Cup-winning cricketers, Shane Watson and Aaron Finch. The atmosphere was lively, with the Australian duo in high spirits. It was during this exchange that Waqar Younis made a humorous comment, one that highlighted his personal connection to Australia.

“I’m a half-Aussie, don’t just call me a Pakistani,” Waqar said on Star Sports.

For those who might not be aware, Waqar is married to a Pakistani-Australian doctor named Faryal, and their family resides in Castle Hill, New South Wales, Australia. The couple has three children – two daughters and a son.

Waqar Younis is celebrated as one of the greatest Pakistani cricketers of all time and is renowned for being one of the most exceptional pacers in the history of the game. His illustrious international career spanned 14 years, during which he played 87 Test matches and 262 ODIs, amassing a staggering 373 and 416 wickets, respectively.

Waqar Younis Serves As An Expert Analyst For The Host Broadcaster

Waqar currently finds himself in India as part of the commentary panel and serves as an expert analyst for the host broadcaster. Discussing the match at hand, it was Australia who put up an imposing total of 367 runs on the board after Pakistan’s skipper, Babar Azam, won the toss and elected to field first.

The opening pair of David Warner and Mitchell Marsh, both World Cup champions five times over, set a new record with a colossal 259-run partnership – the second-highest opening stand in World Cup history. Warner’s outstanding 164 and Marsh’s impressive 121 laid a solid foundation for the Aussies. Despite this setback, Shaheen Afridi’s five-wicket haul signalled a valiant resurgence by the Pakistan bowling attack.

In response, Pakistan got off to a strong start with a 134-run opening partnership between Abdullah Shafique and Imam-Ul-Haq, both of whom secured half-centuries. However, their quick dismissals and a middle-order collapse dented Pakistan’s hopes of a successful chase. Australian spinner Adam Zampa shone with a four-wicket haul, ultimately tilting the game in favour of the Aussies on a pitch favouring the batsmen.

As the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 unfolds, Pakistan faces an uphill battle to regain momentum and secure its place in the tournament’s later stages. Despite the challenges, the tournament continues to provide cricket fans with thrilling matches, unforgettable moments, and, as demonstrated by Waqar Younis, a touch of humour in the post-match analysis.
