Former Australian cricketer Matthew Hayden recently reacted to ace Indian batter Virat Kohli’s century against Bangladesh in the ICC World Cup 2023. Matthew Hayden highlighted that the players must be cautious about their approach in competitions like the World Cup.

Virat Kohli reached his 48th ODI hundred at the MCA Stadium in Pune on Thursday, October 19. The Men in Blue clinched a victory by 7 wickets against Bangladesh. However, Kohli received criticism on social media as he denied singles in the later stages of the match.

Virat Kohli Has Earned The The Right To Get A Hundred – Matthew Hayden

In a conversation with ESPNCricinfo, Matthew Hayden Matthew Hayden noted that Virat Kohli deserved it but emphasized the importance of net run rates.

“My initial reaction was that he’s earned the right to get a hundred. The only thing is, you got to be very careful in these tournaments because you just never know, and the great Ian Bishop often talks about these net run rates… These things matter. and the sporting gods are a sinister mob!” Hayden told ESPNCricinfo.

The Delhi-born cricketer was far from scoring a century at one stage, as he needed 26 runs to win when he was 74. The right-handed batter then scored 29 runs off 17 balls, helping the Indian team chase down the 257 target with more than 8 overs to spare.

Former Indian captain Srikkanth defended Virat Kohli’s century, emphasizing the significance of achieving such a milestone in a major tournament.

“What is wrong in what virat did? I question ppl who don’t understand cricket, note it is a huge deal to score A century in a world cup, @imVkohli deserves this & much more! kudos to a team man like @klrahul who deserved it against Aus in Chennai ! Enjoy when u still can,” Srikkanth tweeted.

The Rohit Sharma-led team retained second place in the 10-team points table, with 8 points to their tally. The Men in Blue will face New Zealand in their fifth match at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala on Sunday, October 22.
