At a time when Pakistan batter Mohammad Rizwan is facing the heat for praying on the playing field, a video of Keshav Maharaj doing the same has gone viral too.
The incident took place during the game between South Africa and Australia at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Thursday (October 12). The event took place during the 35th over of Australia’s innings when Keshav Maharaj was bowling to Marnus Labuschagne and Pat Cummins.
On the fourth ball of the over, the South Africa spinner made Labuschagne hit his shot straight to Temba Bavuma at cover. And after dismissing the last recognized Australian batsman, Keshav Maharaj was seen offering prayer on the field.

South Africa went on to win the game by 134 runs. A century from Quinton de Kock and a half-century from Aiden Markram propelled them to a competitive total of 311 for 7. In reply, Australia were all out for just 177 runs with Kagiso Rabada taking 3 wickets and Keshav Maharaj, Tabraiz Shamsi, and Marco Jansen accounting for two wickets each.
Keshav Maharaj not the first:
Keshav Maharaj is not the first player to offer prayers on the playing field in the ongoing World Cup. Earlier in the competition, Mohammad Rizwan had offered prayers on the playing field too. The Pakistan wicketkeeper-batsman did it during the innings break of the match against the Netherlands in Hyderabad.
Following the incident, a New Delhi-based advocate Vineet Jindal has filed a complaint against him with the International Cricket Council (ICC). Last week, Jindal wrote a letter to the ICC and urged the apex body to take action against the player.
In his letter, he stated that Rizwan’s act of offering Namaz in the middle of a cricket match was an ‘intentional depiction of his religion’ and called it against the spirit of the game. On Tuesday, Jindal also claimed that he received death threats from a terrorist organization after he complained about Rizwan.
