Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has explained why India are the team to beat in the ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.
Team India are one of the strong favorites to win the coveted title this year. The hosts have also proved their title credentials with some impressive performances in recent times. After winning the Asia Cup last month and beating Australia in the ODI series, they have started their World Cup campaign on a stunning note.
The Men in Blue thrashed Australia by six wickets in their tournament opener after bowling out the five-time world champions for just 199 runs. It was followed by an 8-wicket win over Afghanistan after a whirlwind century from captain Rohit Sharma saw them chase down 273 runs in just 35 overs. In their third game, India bowled out Pakistan for just 191 and went on to win the game by seven wickets.

With Team India looking unstoppable at the moment, Ricky Ponting has said that the hosts are the team to beat in the competition. Speaking to the ICC, the three-time World Cup winner stated that India have a very talented squad and said that they have all the bases covered. Ricky Ponting also opined that it will be extremely hard for other teams to beat India before saying that he would like to see their performance under pressure.
“I said from the start that I think they’re going to be the team to beat. They’ve got a very talented team,” Ricky Ponting said.
“They’ve got all bases covered with their fast bowling, their spin and their top-order, middle-order batting. They’re going to be extremely hard to beat. But we’ll see how they hold up under extreme pressure as well,” he added.

Currently at the top of the table with three wins from as many games, Team India will be in action next Thursday (October 19). They are scheduled to play against Bangladesh in Pune.
