Dushan Hemantha made a massive impact in the game against Pakistan in the ICC World Cup 2023. He came in as a substitute fielder and hogged the headlines with his efforts at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.
Pakistan batter Abdullah Shafique seemed to be taking the game away from Sri Lanka. The batter slammed a magnificent century and with the way he was batting it seemed that he would win the game for his team quite easily.
However, he was undone by the brilliance of Dushan Hemantha. Matheesha Pathirana bowled a poor delivery that had a lot of width in it. Abdullah Shafique cut hard as he targeted the boundary. The ball went towards the backward point, where the substitute fielder put a staggering effort at the boundary.
As the ball came sharply, Dushan Hemantha flew to his right and took a take a two-handed stunning catch. With the way Abdullah Shafique was batting, it needed something special to send him packing and the Sri Lanka fielder did exactly that.

Abdullah Shafique ended with a knock of 113 runs off 103 balls. The opening batter played his first innings in the World Cup and made sure that he started on high. His innings put Pakistan on the front foot and they look favourites to win.

Dushan Hemantha came in as a replacement for Kusal Mendis, who was taken to hospital. The keeper-batter suffered cramps after his staggering innings of 122 runs. In his absence, Sadeera Samarawickrama has taken the keeper’s role.
SlC released the official statement and stated:
“Kusal Mendis was taken to the hospital after the player suffered cramps upon returning from the field after his brilliant knock of 122 runs from 77 balls in the ongoing game vs. Pakistan. Dushan Hemantha is on the field for Mendis, while Sadeera Samarawickrama has taken over the wicketkeeping duties in the absence of Mendis.”
