ENG vs NZ: Rachin Ravindra Lauds Devon Conway, Says “4-5 Years Ago, We All Knew He Would Become The Player He Is”

The 23-year-old New Zealand National Cricket Team batting all-rounder Rachin Ravindra delivered an absolutely stupendous performance in his ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup debut against Jos Buttler-led England National Cricket Team at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Thursday, October 5.

He hit 123 runs off 96 balls, with 11 fours and 5 sixes, and alongside Devon Conway, who smashed a sensational 152 runs off 121 balls, guided New Zealand to a dominant 9-wicket win as they completed the run-chase in 36.2 overs.

Earlier, England lost and the toss and were invited to bat first. Joe Root was the top run-getter for his side as he amassed 77 runs off 86 balls, with 4 fours and 1 six. Also, all the 11 players in the England line-up scored at least 10 runs each and they were restricted to 282/9 in 50 overs. This was the first instance in the history of ODI cricket that 11 batters in a team had reached double figures.

Special to finish it off with him – Rachin Ravindra on Devon Conway

Rachin Ravindra was awarded Player of the Match for his score of 123* & bowling figures of 1/76. During the post-match presentation ceremony, Rachin said that he is very close to Conway and felt great to finish off the game with the senior opener. He lavished rich praise on Conway, saying that they knew he’d become a great player 4-5 years ago. He said:

“Great to have a great day. Boys bowled and fielded well to restrict them to 280. Luckily I had Devon out there to show me how to do it. (I am) Very very close with Devon. Special to finish it off with him. 4-5 years ago, we all knew Devon would become the player he is. Above all, he’s a great guy.”

Rachin Ravindra revealed that he came to know about playing just yesterday as Lockie Ferguson had picked up a niggle. He elaborated:

“It was yesterday (because of) the thing (niggle) with Lockie (when did he know he’ll bat at three?). Good to get the opportunity. We’ll see what happens. I’m actually quite a good sleeper luckily. There was some swing, but the surface was really good to bat on.”

Rachin Ravindra completed his ton off 82 balls, breaking his batting partner Conway’s record for the fastest century for New Zealand in the World Cup.

Rachin Ravindra, who is named after Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar, became the fifth BlackCaps batter to hit a ton on World Cup debut after Glenn Turner (1975), Nathan Astle (1996), Scott Styris (2003) and Devon Conway (2023). He also became the youngest New Zealand player to score a century in World Cups.
