Big Blow To Bangladesh As Shakib al Hasan Wants To Quit Captaincy Ahead Of ICC World Cup 2023- Report

Bangladesh ODI captain Shakib Al Hasan has communicated his concerns to the Bangladesh Cricket Board. Shakib wants to step down as the captain of the Bangladesh Cricket Team right before the World Cup. Shakib Al Hasan and Bangladesh’s Head Coach Chandika Hathurusingha went to BCB President Nazmul Hassan Papon’s residence for a meeting at midnight. It was expected that the World Cup Squad would be discussed but as the sources have revealed, it was entirely a different conversation.

Bangladesh is one of the two teams who are still to announce their squad for the World Cup. With only a few days remaining for the deadline, Bangladesh is still trying to find their team combination. One of the major concerns for Bangladesh has been Tamim Iqbal’s recurring back injury.

Tamim Iqbal batted for the first time in the second ODI against New Zealand after leaving ODI captaincy. He scored 44 runs but later in the press conference, he revealed that he might not be fully fit and will have to miss a few matches in the World Cup.

Tamim Iqbal’s injury is one of the major concerns for the team management as the nature of his injury is such that the pain keeps resurfacing and can intensify at any moment. Tamim Iqbal announced his retirement earlier this year but withdrew it after a special request from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Sources believe that Shakib wants to leave Captaincy because he doesn’t want players with injury concerns playing in the World Cup.

Shakib Al Hasan Does Not Want Half-Fit Players In The Squad For The World Cup

Shakib Al Hasan was clear in his communication to the team management that he doesn’t want half-fit players in the squad and if there are any repercussions then he would like to step down as Bangladesh’s ODI Captain. Bangladesh need to take a call regarding Tamim Iqbal’s injury concerns quickly as the deadline is approaching soon and they have to submit a 15-member squad for the World Cup.

Shakib Al Hasan wants a fully fit team for the World Cup but Tamim Iqbal is too experienced to be left out of the squad. It will be interesting to see who will be making it to Bangladesh’s World Cup Squad. Reports suggest that it could be announced during the innings break of the third ODI between Bangladesh and New Zealand.
