The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially announced that the young spin-bowling all-rounder Washington Sundar has been added to India’s 17-man Asia Cup 2023 squad ahead of the summit clash.
Rohit Sharma-led India National Cricket Team and Dasun Shanaka-led Sri Lanka National Cricket Team will lock horns with each other in the final of the Asia Cup 2023 on Sunday, September 17, at the R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo.
Axar Patel had the opportunity to play in two matches in the Asia Cup 2023. In his first game against Sri Lanka, he scored 26 runs and had bowling figures of 0/29. In his second game against Bangladesh, he showcased a batting masterclass and hit 42 runs to keep the hopes of Indian fans alive, but he wasn’t able to help India cross the finish line and they lost by 6 runs.
Also, he had a bowling figures of 1/47. It was during the Bangladesh clash that Axar had suffered an injury, which has ruled him out of the final of the continental tournament.

In an official statement issued by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), it was mentioned that the left-arm spin-bowling all-rounder Axar has been ruled out of the Asia Cup final due to a Left Quadriceps Strain.
It was further mentioned that Washington Sundar will be replacing Axar in the squad ahead of the match against Sri Lanka. Notably, Sundar last played an ODI game earlier in January 2023 and he might get a call-up for the World Cup as well, in case the injury of Axar turns out to be a severe one.
“Mr. Axar Patel has been ruled out of the Asia Cup final against Sri Lanka due to a left quadriceps strain sustained during India’s Super Four match against Bangladesh on Friday.
“The Men’s Selection Committee has named Mr Washington Sundar as a replacement. The all-rounder arrived in Colombo this evening and has joined the squad,” the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said in an official media release.
