Former cricketers Michael Vaughan and Adam Gilchrist have come up with a hilarious suggestion for the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), the custodian of the laws of cricket.
Unlike most of the sports in the world, cricket has shown its adaptability by being willing to change its rules to keep up with the times. Innovations and new ideas have always been respected in the gentlemen’s game and it would now be interesting to see whether Michael Vaughan and Adam Gilchrist’s innovative idea gets the nod or not.
The former England skipper along with former Australia wicketkeeper recently talked on the cricket podcast ‘Club Prairie Fire’. During the discussion, the host of the show talked about an incident that took place in the final of the recently concluded FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Michael Vaughan and Adam Gilchrist’s suggestion for MCC:
During the contest between Spain and England, Spanish star Jenni Hermoso was spotted making an X-rated gesture towards England ace Chloe Kelly. Hermoso was seen raising her Middle Finger in Kelly’s direction. And both Michael Vaughan and Adam Gilchrist believe that the gesture should find a place in cricket too. Michael Vaughan hilariously suggested that instead of raising the index finger, the umpires should raise their middle finger to signal out.
“That’s a better way, isn’t it? You’re gonna swear an opponent who speaks a different language, you’re better off doing it off with a sign language, middle finger or two. Because at least they can understand that. That is the language you can understand, there’s no point speaking in your language,” said Michael Vaughan.
“We should bring that in world of sports. The middle finger is a global piece of language that we all understand,” he added.
Adam Gilchrist was quick to make his stand clear, saying” “I think it’s a fair point. I have often wondered whether that might be a more appropriate way for umpire when he raises his or her finger.”
Speaking further, Michael Vaughan suggested that the MCC should introduce the middle-finger law in the game, saying: “The MCC Cricket Committee, you talk about about changes in the game and then you present it to the ICC and the ICC generally goes no. You travel around the world as this committee and very little gets done,
“When you’re out, you’re pissed off and you are on your bike. Maybe we should ask, there’s a guy called Fraser Stewart who’s involved at the MCC. We think umpire should give the middle finger. Why are they giving the index finger? We need to change it to the middle finger,” he added.
