AUS vs ENG: Stuart Broad Reveals The Biggest Fear Of His Celebrated Test Career

Stuart Broad retired from international career after the 2-2 drawn Ashes 2023 series. England won the fifth Test at the Oval to level the series with Stuart Broad taking the final Australian wicket to wrap up the fourth innings of the match.

Soon after his retirement, Stuart Broad bagged a commentary stint with Sky Sports. His dear friend and long-time teammate James Anderson is still willing to continue playing cricket. Stuart Broad meanwhile ended his career as England’s second-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket with 604 wickets from 167 matches with an average of 27.68, consisting of 20 five-wicket hauls, as well as three 10-wicket hauls.

Talking to AB De Villiers on his Youtube channel, Broad shared the biggest fear that he had throughout his Test career. He said that his wish was to finish at the top and not be tagged as a rubbish bowler by any random cricketer.

I Wanted To Finish At The Top Tier: Stuart Broad

“Moving on from the game is one of the toughest decisions you could ever make. For me, I wanted to still love the game. I wanted to still know I could compete at the top level when I moved on. Ultimately, I wanted to finish at the very top. I’d almost say that one of my biggest fears was bowling against 20-year-old opening batters and them going, ‘I heard he was good, but he’s rubbish’. I knew I wanted to finish while I can still do it.”

“I never wanted that feeling of going six months too late or finishing with my last act on a cricket field being a torn hamstring and you are never seen again. That was tearing my mind a bit.”

He further said that once he wished to finish at the top the decision to retire became an easier one. He further stated, “It was always my dream to see England square off against Australia; it was the apex of my professional life”.

Broad ended with 153 wickets in 40 Ashes test matches, the most by any English bowler in an Ashes series. He ended his career in a grand style bagging the last two Australian wickets on day five to win the fifth Test for England.

“I’ve never thought it could have ended up in the fairy tale that it did, actually taking a wicket with the final ball to win a Test match. It hasn’t sunk in yet, it’s probably been only 10 days. I have no regrets. I am feeling very calm and relaxed about the situation,” said Broad reflecting on his Test career.
