IND vs WI: “He Is Destined To Be A Big Player” – Tilak Varma’s Childhood Coach On His Success

Tilak Varma’s childhood coach Salam Bayash was in awe of the young batter’s exploits in the ongoing T20I series against West Indies. He said that Southpaw is destined to be a big player and they both put in the hard yards.

The tale of Tilak Varma as an international cricketer kickstarted with two massive sixes and very few are able to do this. The young Mumbai Indians batter displayed a sensational batting display in the first two games of the ongoing five-match T20I series against West Indies.

Tilak Varma has carried the Indian lineup in the first two games, which speaks a lot of his caliber. The left-hander played a blistering 39 runs innings in the first T20I and then followed it up with a magnificent half-century in the second game to bring up his maiden fifty for India.

Tilak Varma has looked unfazed by the pressure of international cricket as he has been staggering and has given a great indication to the selectors that he’s here to stay. His knock of 51 runs in the second game powered India to a total of 152 runs, which seemed impossible at one stage.

Tilak Varma’s coach Salam Bayash was delighted with the way the batter has set the international stage on fire. He recalled how they both put in a lot of hard work. Speaking to News 18, he explained:

“He belongs to a very humble background. Main mehnat kraya, vo mehnat kiya (I asked him to put in the effort and he followed me). I’m very happy for him.”

“Every coach wants to see his student playing for the country and my wish got fulfilled. I always believed that he is destined to be a big player and we just kept working hard towards this.”

From morning 6 to evening 6, he used to be in the academy – Salam Bayash on Tilak Varma

Salam Bayash further recalled how his Tilak Varma used to spend 12 hours in his academy. He added that his zeal towards the game made him work on his skills more. He added:

“From morning 6 to evening 6, he used to be in the academy. He used to fall asleep while sitting behind me and I used to be afraid that he might fall while sleeping because he used to get that tired.”
“So, I asked his parents to make a shift nearby to the academy. Tilak’s job was only to focus on cricket and his zeal and passion made me concentrate more on developing his skills.”

Salam Bayash also revealed that Tilak Varma fulfilled his wish to meet batting great Sachin Tendulkar. He said:

“Sachin sir likes him very much. I will tell you another instance. Tilak told him that my teacher is a very big fan of yours. So, Sachin Sir replied, ‘I know everything about you and your coach’. Last year, when Sachin sir came to Hyderabad, I got to meet him and that was a big, big moment for me.”

Tilak Varma will be next seen in action when India take on West Indies in the third T20I on Tuesday (8th August) at Guyana.
