AUS vs ENG: “Mitchell Marsh Is A Great Option”- Adam Voges On Australia’s Next White-Ball Captain

Former Australian cricketer Adam Voges feels that the Western Australia skipper Mitchell Marsh is ready to take over the white-ball captaincy from Aaron Finch. Finch retired from international cricket after the T20 World Cup last year and the side is yet to name Finch’s successor.

Australia will take on South Africa at home in a three-match T20I series followed by a five-match ODI series. This is Australia’s first T20I series since the T20 World Cup 2022. Australia are looking for options to replace Finch as the next T20I skipper. There are reports that Pat Cummins will also hand over ODI captaincy after the ODI World Cup in India later this year.

Mitchell Marsh is one of the likely options given his good run of form lately. He played a key role in Australia’s T20 World Cup 2021 victory. Since then he has played for Australia across three formats and done well in all of them.

Adam Voges while speaking to AAP spoke about Marsh being a viable option. The former Australian cricketer is also impressed by his gritty 31* off 107 balls that he scored in the second innings to keep Australia alive in Manchester.

“Mitch is a great option. You know he will be in the team. He has captaincy experience and history for a period of time now. We don’t get to see him too much these days (in the WA side), so he doesn’t do it for us now but he is certainly capable. If anything, I would have thought his leadership and captaincy credentials have only increased by being part of that vacuum and environment (with Australia),” he said to AAP.

Managing Mitchell Marsh’s Workload Biggest Challenge: Adam Voges

The Australian all-rounder had earlier ruled himself out of the race for ODI captaincy due to his concerns over his fitness and ankle surgery. The other big concern is his workload management being an all-rounder in the side. He has been injury prone previously which is why there is a concern regarding his fitness.

“That’s his biggest challenge, managing all that workload. To be the genuine all-rounder in the team and captain is a lot. But the reason they would be confident in him being able to handle that is the maturity he has now. He is as well placed to be able to handle those demands as he has ever been. No doubt it is a big workload, but he is well prepared and ready for that,” Voges concluded saying.
