After leading South Zone to the title in Duleep Trophy 2023, captain Hanuma Vihari said that he enjoyed his captaincy in the tournament. Hanuma Vihari also said that he did not have pressure due to the presence of a strong bowling attack in his team.

South Zone crushed West Zone by 75 runs in Duleep Trophy 2023 final. Defending 298 runs in the final innings of the match, South Zone bundled out West Zone for 222. Notably, West Zone had a strong batting line-up during the chase with the likes of Cheteshwar Pujara, Suryakumar Yadav, Sarfaraz Khan, and Prithvi Shaw in the team.

When You Have A Team Like That, You Will Enjoy Doing Captaincy: Hanuma Vihari

While speaking to reporters after the victory, South Zone skipper Hanuma Vihari hailed his teammates. The right-handed batter said that he enjoyed his captaincy in the tournament with a powerful team.

“Yeah! Definitely I enjoyed captaincy. When you have a team like that you will enjoy doing captaincy. When you have this kind of bowling attack, captaincy pressure will come down. It was out plan to curtail them to below three runs (per over), and they executed it as the quality bowlers will make the captain’s job really easy,” Vihari said.

Talking about the nail-biting final clash, Vihari feels that Sarfaraz Khan’s wicket was the turning point in the match.

“Yesterday in the third session, Priyank and Sarfaraz batted really well. His dismissal was the turning point, I thought. Sarfaraz was there, he could have handled that spell of Vidwath and Koushik, and getting Sarfaraz’s wicket in the last session was the turning point,” said Vihari, who has also played 16 Tests for India so far.

Priyank Panchal (95) and Sarfaraz Khan (48) scored the most runs for the West Zone during the chase. However, the rest of the batters failed to come up with good knocks. For South Zone, Vasuki Koushik and R Sai Kishore were stand-out bowlers with 4 wickets each.

Earlier, South Zone batted first in the Duleep Trophy 2023 final and posted 213-10 in 1st innings with Hanuma Vihari’s 63. Later, West Zone were bowled out for just 146 in 1st innings, conceding a 67-run lead to Hanuma Vihari & Co.

In 2nd innings, South Zone hit 230-10 with crucial knocks by Washington Sundar (37), Mayank Agarwal (35), Ricky Bhui (37), and Hanuma Vihari (42). Later, they defended a target of 298 in the final innings.
