IND vs WI: Ishant Sharma Lists Promising Long-Term Test Pacers For India, Skips Mohammed Shami Due To Age Factor

Veteran Indian pacer Ishant Sharma revealed his list of promising pacers for India in Tests in the long run. Ishant Sharma, who is also an active commentator in IND vs WI Test series, skipped Mohammed Shami’s name due to his age.

Currently, Mohammed Shami is one of the key pacers for Team India in Tests. The right-arm pacer has led the pace attack in the longest format during the last two World Test Championship cycles. With Jasprit Bumrah’s ouster from the team last year, Shami became an even more vital pacer for India in red-ball cricket.

Mohammed Shami Tells Me He Is A Year Older Than Me: Ishant Sharma

During a discussion on Jio Cinema, right-arm pacer Ishant Sharma was asked about India’s long-term prospects in Tests in the pace department. Ishant Sharma named some bowlers but skipped Mohammed Shami due to his age.

“(Mohammed) Siraj, (Navdeep) Saini and Mukesh (Kumar). Obviously, it will depend on (Jasprit) Bumrah’s fitness. It will be extremely important how you use (Mohammad) Shami because of his age. Shami tells me he is a year older than me. So I am 34, Shami might be 35,” Sharma said on a comical note.

Prasidh Krishna Looks Extremely Interesting Prospect: Ishant Sharma

Ishant Sharma also feels Prasidh Krishna is an interesting prospect for the team. However, he also noted it’s important to see how he performs after his back injury. Avesh Khan was another name on Sharma’s list.

“After that, Prasidh Krishna looks to be an extremely interesting prospect to me. Obviously, he is coming back from an injury, so (it needs to be seen) how he does in first-class cricket. A lot of things change in your bowling and body after an injury and especially after a back injury.”

“These are five and then you will have to see which guys do well in Under-19, Emerging or first-class cricket. Avesh Khan is one who comes to my mind. So these six bowlers, so how you rotate them and manage their workload,” Ishant Sharma further said.

Right-arm pacer Prasidh Krishna has been out of the field for almost a year due to a back injury. The 27-year-old seamer made his ODI debut in March 2021 against England. Krishna last played in an ODI against Zimbabwe in August 2022. In 14 ODIs, he accounts for 25 wickets.

Avesh Khan is another pacer who has spent a lot of time off the field due to injury issues. The right-arm pacer played many games for India last year. However, he got injured in August 2022 during Asia Cup. Later, he reappeared in IPL 2023 but left the tournament midway. Now, Avesh Khan has been picked for the forthcoming T20I series against West Indies next month.
