Former English cricketer Liam Plunkett, who will play for San Francisco Unicorns, in the ongoing Major League Cricket (MLC) 2023 has predicted a bold future of the league. He feels that tournament will be right up there behind Indian Premier League (IPL) as it’s taken very seriously in America.
The inaugural edition of the Major League Cricket kicked started with a blockbuster clash with Texas Super Kings and Los Angeles Knight Riders in Dallas. The league saw a great response from the American public as many came to watch the game.

The USA-based tournament will see 19 games being played among six teams in MI New York, Texas Super Kings, Los Angeles Knight Riders, Seattle Orcas, San Francisco Unicorns and Washington Freedom. IPL franchises too have invested in the league and and some global superstars will be part of the league.

Liam Plunkett highlighted how MLC has been taken seriously by the American public and he hopes the league to achieve great laurels. Speaking to the BCC Sports, he said:

“It can be right up there just behind the IPL. Obviously, it will be hard to overtake the IPL but MLC is being taken very seriously and America is the biggest place in the world for sport. Let’s see where that ceiling is. Nobody knows and that’s the exciting part, it is unknown. There’s huge potential.”

MLC 2023: “Like the Indians, Americans are very passionate,” says Liam Plunkett
Liam Plunkett further went on to say that with huge sponsorships and partnerships, MLC will take superstars of the game to a big level. He said that like the Indian public, Americans also are passionate. He explained:
“Away from cricket, there are all sorts of different sponsorships and partnerships. Who knows where that is going to take some of the superstars of the game?
When Americans get excited about something, they go above and beyond. Like the Indians, they are very passionate. With these players coming across, it shows there’s massive excitement. They want to be here because if it takes off, it could be huge,” he added.
Texas Super Kings thrashed Los Angeles Knight Riders by 69 runs in the opening match. The next game will take place between San Francisco Unicorns and MI New York on July 15th. Liam Plunkett will be seen in action too in this game as well.
