Asia Cup 2023: ACC-PCB Officials To Meet In Dubai To Finalise Details About Asia Cup 2023, Scheduled To Be Released Soon: Report

A final decision on Asia Cup 2023 is likely to be announced soon. The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) recently confirmed that the tournament would be held from August 31st to September 17th. However, the full schedule for the competition is yet to be announced because of Pakistan’s stance.

Initially, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had threatened to boycott the entire competition after reports emerged that Asia Cup was likely to be played outside Pakistan due to India’s stand. BCCI secretary Jay Shah had announced that India would not visit Pakistan because of poor bilateral relations between the two countries.

Later, the PCB proposed a hybrid model and the ACC eventually accepted it. Consequently, Asia Cup 2023 is scheduled to be played in Pakistan and Sri Lanka now. While Pakistan will host four matches of the competition, Sri Lanka will host the remaining nine. The PCB, however, is yet to give the green light to the competition. Consequently, the ACC has not been able to announce the full schedule yet.

But a final decision on the matter is likely to be announced soon after the PCB officials meet the representatives of ACC in Dubai on Sunday & Monday. The officials will be finalizing the details and schedule of the event.

“To start with, the ACC just agreed to hold one Asia Cup match (Pakistan vs Nepal) in Pakistan but following a series of discussions between former Management Committee chairman Najam Sethi and ACC officials it was decided that Pakistan would host three matches and then a fourth was added,” a PCB official told The News.

“Pakistan will host four matches now that include Pakistan vs Nepal and almost all the first round matches of other groups, Afghanistan vs Bangladesh, Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka and Sri Lanka vs Afghanistan. Pakistan will play against arch-rivals India most probably in Dambulla twice in a week and then again if both teams make it to the final,” he added.

PCB’s concerns over Asia Cup 2023:

The PCB official further said that the board’s main concern is not the venue of the matches in Sri Lanka but the revenue that the tournament will generate for them. Originally, Pakistan were given the hosting rights for the competitions before India made their stand clear. PCB had initially proposed UAE as a neutral venue but other countries refused the proposal citing the harsh weather conditions.

“It has already been finalized that Pakistan will only host Asia Cup matches as a host nation while the rest of the event will be held in Sri Lanka. The important thing is how much Pakistan gets as revenue to host the remaining matches in Sri Lanka.

“By organizing the event in UAE, we were confident of getting a healthy revenue from gate money, ground hoarding, and other such related marketing ventures. But in Sri Lanka, it is hard to generate an extra amount. We have to reach some understanding with the ACC to ensure that we would get the revenues we are looking at,” said the official.

“Even during Najam Sethi’s tenure as the head of the PCB Committee, Pakistan was engaged in talks with ACC officials to ensure the amount equal to what India generated by hosting Asia Cup in the UAE last year. That is what we are looking at and that is to generate the same revenues what India generated from hosting the Asia Cup last year in Dubai,” he added.

With the financial aspect being the only concern, one can expect the parties to hit a deal soon and the schedule is likely to be out in the coming days. India, Pakistan, and debutant Nepal have been clubbed together in Group A while Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan are in Group B.
