Batting great Sunil Gavaskar has demanded more accountability for India National Cricket Team head coach Rahul Dravid, batting coach Vikram Rathour and bowling coach Paras Mhambrey following the team’s failures in big matches.
The support staff of Team India has been facing heavy criticism following India’s failures in mega-events. Dravid, Rathour, and Mhambrey have come under scrutiny after India’s recent failure in the WTC Final.

Australia hammered India by 209 runs in the WTC Final at Kennington Oval in London. Indian bowlers failed in the match as the Aussies piled up 469 runs in the first innings itself. On the other hand, India’s star batters failed miserably as they managed to score just 296 & 234 in two innings.

Meanwhile, Sunil Gavaskar raised the question of accountability for the Indian coaching staff. He said that it’s the responsibility of the coaches to help players when they are repeating their mistakes.
“If the batters are making the same mistakes over and over again, you need to ask what has happened with your technique. How have you tried to improve the batter? Have you tried to tell him, maybe take a different guard. Don’t take a leg-stump guard, take a middle and off stump guard,” Gavaskar said at The Indian Express Idea Exchange.

I remember once calling Virender Sehwag out of the blue – Sunil Gavaskar
Sunil Gavaskar further recalled an interesting incident involving legendary batter Virender Sehwag. The 73-year-old said that he once told Sehwag to take an off-stump guard when he was struggling to perform. According to Gavaskar such inputs need to come from the coaches of the team.

“I remember once calling Virender Sehwag out of the blue. He had not been scoring too many runs. I told him, ‘Viru, just try the off-stump guard’. So he asked, ‘Why, Sunny bhai?’ So I told him, ‘Look, you aren’t known for great footwork. What is happening is, sometimes when you are getting out, you are reaching out for the delivery and it makes things difficult for you. So, maybe if you take the off-stump guard, you straight away know that the ball is outside the off-stump’. That is where the coach can come in with his inputs,” Sunil Gavaskar further said.

India will be next seen in action when they will take on West Indies in an all-format series. The first Test will be played between July 12-16 while the second Test will be played between July 20-24. The ODIs will be held on July 27, July 29, and August 1. Meanwhile, the T20I matches are scheduled for August 3, 6, 8, 12 and 13.
