Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif hailed Sourav Ganguly as the best Indian skipper he played under. He said that as a young guy, he was emboldened while playing under his leadership and credited him for taking the team forward.
Sourav Ganguly is considered one of the finest players to have captained India. The southpaw made the Indian team one of the most fearless teams in the world of cricket and he instilled a positive attitude in the players. He didn’t shy away from giving back to the opposition.

Sourav Ganguly backed a lot of players during his time and it was because of him why Indian team got Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh and others. He captained India in 49 Tests and 146 ODIs and had a win percentage of 42.85 and 52.05. He also took his side to the final of 2003 World Cup final and under him they were declared joint-winners of the 2002 Champions Trophy.

Mohammad Kaif, who played 83 ODIs under Sourav Ganguly, recalled his captain’s word and said that the former BCCI President built the team.

“I would say Sourav Ganguly. I remember he told me that I should go out there and give my best shot and that he is there to back me, he is there to support me. That’s a big comment. As a young guy, if you have a captain like Sourav Ganguly, you get emboldened while playing for India. Sourav Ganguly was amazing, he was fantastic. Captaincy means you need to be a leader – lead from the front, pick the right players and back them. Ganguly built the team,” Speaking to interaction on ‘Virtual Encounters’ on DD India.

Mohammad Kaif further went on to say that Sourav Ganguly was the main reason behind India getting Sehwag, Zaheer Khan, Yuvraj Singh, Mohammad Kaif and Harbhajan Singh.
“After what had happened earlier, when he got the opportunity to captain after the 2001 match-fixing scandal, he took the Indian team forward. He brought the likes of Sehwag, Zaheer Khan, Yuvraj Singh, Mohammad Kaif and Harbhajan Singh. So I think he was the one, took the team forward, there is no doubt about that,” he concluded.
