Ashes 2023: ‘Ball Shouldn’t Hit The Ground’ – Stuart Broad On Mitchell Starc’s Controversial Catch At Lord’s

England pacer Stuart Broad talked about Mitchell Starc’s controversial catch on the Day 4 of the ongoing second Test of the Ashes 2023 at the Lord’s Cricket Ground. He said that if that is the way to catch the ball then all of them would be doing it.

Ashes 2023 is living up to the expectations as there has been a staggering competition between bat and ball. What adds more to it is the heated battles between the players as well as the controversies that involve even people watching the game from outside.

Australia pacer Mitchell Starc was the hot soup of the Day 4 of the second Test after he gobbled the catch of Ben Duckett and then dragged the ball along the ground while landing. This didn’t amaze third umpire Marais Erasmus, who after checking the replay termed it not out.

After the incident, a controversy erupted as many fans and pundits had different opinions about the decision. Many feel that it was out and Ben Duckett should’ve been termed out. Notably, the southpaw was batting at 50 at that time.

Stuart Broad gave his take on the catch and said that as per his understanding it wasn’t a fair catch and the hands should be facing upwards. Writing in his column for the Daily Mail, he said:

“Ultimately, from my understanding of the rule, the ball isn’t allowed to hit the ground. We’ve all played cricket where a catch is attempted with your hands facing upwards and your elbow hits the ground and the ball pops out.

“But you catch the ball and turn your hands and grind the ball on the ground, the ball can’t pop out of your hand. If that was a legal way of catching, we’d all be doing it.”

Ashes 2023: I should have had one of course when we should have reviewed the Marnus Labuschagne LBW – Stuart Broad

During Australia’s second innings, Stuart Broad struck Marnus Labuschagne on the pads but the umpire didn’t give that out. Even England skipper Ben Stokes opted against taking the review and when the replay was shown, the ball tracker showed it was out.

Talking about that Stuart Broad said that he should’ve had that wicket and they should’ve taken the review. He explained:

“I was also disappointed because I have bowled much worse than I did and ended up with more wickets. I should have had one of course when we should have reviewed the Marnus Labuschagne Lbw. To be honest, the ball before tea which was shown to be going down leg side stuffed us, really stuffed us.”

Coming to the match, Australia are at the top of the game. While defending the target of 271 runs, they have taken the 4 England wickets and are just 6 wickets away from taking a lead of 2-0. The hosts on the other hand are 257 runs away.
