Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar opened up about the Men Blue’s loss against Australia in the World Test Championship (WTC 2023) final at the Oval. Sunil Gavaskar criticized the selectors for not questioning Rohit Sharma regarding his decisions during the crucial match earlier this month.
The Rohit Sharma-led team suffered a 209-run defeat against Australia in the WTC final at the Oval in London. Ravichandran Ashwin was dropped, and Umesh Yadav was included in the playing XI. The decision backfired as the Men in Blue pacers failed to trouble the Australian batters on a flat surface.

During an interview with Sports Tak, Sunil Gavaskar said that there is a lack of accountability in the Indian cricket team at the moment.
“Did you have a meeting after the WTC Final where you discussed on whether you should appoint a captain? When we used to play, there was a selection committee meeting where a captain was appointed. Then, he would be asked to join a meeting two days later,” Gavaskar said.

“He would then tell the selectors what the team needs. But this doesn’t happen in our cricket anymore. Once you select a captain, he remains the captain no matter what. It doesn’t matter how many series you lose, you won’t be changed. If your individual performance is good, you remain captain,” he added.

There’s No Accountability – Sunil Gavaskar
The former Indian skipper highlighted the importance of having a strong selector who would ask questions regarding team strategies, player selections, and tactics used during the match.
“If we had a strong selector, he would ask why did you drop Ashwin? Why you opted to field first? Why did you not use a short-ball tactic on Travis Head as soon as he arrived at the crease?” he further stated.

“Asking these questions is important. Otherwise, there’s no accountability. You can appoint them even after asking those questions. I’m not saying drop them. But there must be accountability,” he concluded.
