Ashes 2023: “I Think My Coaching Has Helped Him A Bit More With His Bowling,” Nathan Lyon On Joe Root

Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon opened up about his days with Joe Root in the grade cricket. He revealed that both taught each other how to bat and ball and touted it as a “pretty special time”. 

Both Nathan Lyon and Joe Root are probably among the best Test cricketers going in World cricket. Both mastered the art of bowling and batting respectively and have won many games for their side with their staggering performances.

Nathan Lyon and Joe Root were part of the Prospect Pirates in Adelaide grade cricket in 2010-11 at the Darren Lehmann Academy. The two were pretty young in their careers at that time but they shared lots of ideas and tips with each other related to batting and bowling.

Nathan Lyon while talking about that period cheekily quipped that his bowling tips helped Joe Root but his batting tips didn’t help him. Calling it a special time, the off-spinner while talking to AAP, said:

“It was a pretty special time. We used to go to training early and I used to help him with off-break bowling and he used to help me with my batting. I think my coaching has helped him a bit more with his bowling than his coaching with my batting.”

Ashes 2023: “In my eyes, he is one of the greats to play the game,” says Nathan Lyon On Joe Root 

Nathan Lyon further went on to laud Joe Root, who is the second-highest run-getter for England in Test cricket, saying that he’s one of the greats to play the game. He added that the batter always provides a different challenge. He explained: 

“In my eyes, he is one of the greats to play the game and what he has done for English cricket needs to be applauded. Our time playing grade will hold some fond memories for me for the rest of my life. Joe has been one of the best batters in international cricket for a long time now. He always provides a different challenge and is always looking to be get better.” 

Both Nathan Lyon and Joe Root are facing off each other in the first Test of the ongoing Ashes 2023 at the Edgbaston in Birmingham.
