ICC World Test Championship Final: “It Should Be At Least A Three-Game Series” – David Warner On One-Off Final Of The WTC

Australia opener David Warner feels that there should be a three-match series to decide the winner of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC). He said that after two years of Cricket, a one-off game at a neutral venue is something that is not justified.

India and Australia are lining up for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final. The clash will take place at the Oval, England from the 7th to the 11th June. Both the teams played an exceptional brand of cricket in this cycle of the Championship and found themselves in the final.

After two years of hard work, it’ll be just one game to decide the winner of the Test Championship. Many player and pundits have expressed their desire to play at least a three-match series to determine the winner but ICC hasn’t considered it as yet.

David Warner, who will be crucial to Australia’s chances, feels that instead of one game there should be a series. He also said that reaching the final is the reward for both the world-class bowling lineups. In a recent interaction with reporters in Beckenham, he said:

“I think it’s great. I have been – I won’t say critical – but I do think it should be at least a three-game series with Test cricket only. You play two years of good cricket, then you play on a neutral venue against an opposition.

“We’ve all played here before but [this game is] not against the same [host] nation. It’s a great reward for the two best teams. Two world-class bowling attacks bowling with a Dukes ball on foreign land. It’s great and we’re excited for that.”

ICC World Test Championship Final: “I’m probably batting better than I ever have in the nets” -David Warner

David Warner has been struggling to get going in the Tests since the last few games. He scored a double century against South Africa earlier this year, but after that, he has been going through a lean patch. He has failed to reach fifty in the last 18 Test innings. David Warner however feels that he’s feeling superb about his batting in the nets as he has been quite energetic. He explained:

“I remember 2013, I was in the nets and copping it left, right and centre in the media about getting bowled by Mitchell Starc and all the other guys and how I wasn’t in form in the nets. I found that a bit bizarre because I’m probably one of the worst netters going around. But here, I’ve actually been superb, in terms of how my feet have been moving. My energy’s been moving, I’ve been up and about. I’m probably batting better than I ever have in the nets.”

David Warner isn’t taking things lightly as he’s aware of what India brings to the table. He said that playing with the Dukes ball at the neutral bowling lineup will be exciting as they have played outstanding cricket over the last two years.

“We’ve played some outstanding cricket over the last 18-24 months. We know what India will bring to the table. It’s a great neutral venue, two world-class bowling attacks with a Dukes ball and from a batter’s perspective, I can’t wait to get out there.”

David Warner further said that he hasn’t worked on his plans for facing veteran pacer Stuart Broad in the Ashes. He also took a fresh jibe at the veteran pacer, stating that his focus is currently on Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, and Shardul Thakur and he will only worry about Broad if he earns a selection in the playing XI.

“I haven’t really worked on that [plans for Broad] yet,” he said. “I’m concentrating on the WTC final. Mohammed Shami and [Mohammed] Siraj and Shardul Thakur is what’s on my mind first. That’s what important to us right now, then I’ll switch on and worry about Stuart Broad if they select him for the first Test this time.”

David Warner is expected to play a huge role for Australia batting at the top. If he finds his touch back, it’s fair to say that he can single-handedly take the game away from India, who would be looking to take him early.
