Former Indian cricketerKarsan Ghavri has lashed out at Delhi Capitals (DC) player Prithvi Shaw for his poor performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. He highlighted that both he and Shubman Gill started together and it was everyone to see where he is as compared to the Gujarat Titans (GT) batter. 

Prithvi Shaw was the biggest disappointment for Delhi Capitals in their torrid season in IPL 2023. He was the root cause behind tea struggling to get going in the tournament and amid his failures, he was even dropped from the playing 11 of the team.

With the kind of domestic form Prithvi Shaw was in, it was expected that he would set the stage on fire this year. But this wasn’t the case as he bagged his worst season in the league. He struggled to negotiate the new ball and bagged a handful of failures this year.

Prithvi Shaw struggled to score runs this year as he managed just 106 runs from 8 games at a poor average of just 13.25 and a strike rate of 124.52. His best performance came in DC’s second-last game against Punjab Kings where he scored a half-century.

Karsan Ghavri cited the example of Shubman Gill lashing out at Prithvi Shaw. He said that the DC batter needs to understand things because it’s a completely different scenario on the international stage. Speaking to the Indian Express, he said: 

“They were in the same team that won the U-19 World Cup in 2018, right? Today where is Prithvi Shaw and where is Shubman Gill? They are in two different categories. Shaw thinks he is a star and nobody can touch him. 

“But he needs to understand that at the international level, irrespective of whether you are playing T20, 50 over or the Test match or even the Ranji Trophy, it takes only one delivery to get you out.”

IPL 2023: “Gill has worked on his flaws, while Shaw hasn’t,” says Karsan Ghavri

Both Shubman Gill and Prithvi Shaw were part of the Indian U19 cricket team that won the World Cup in 2018. Shaw has been struggling to find a place in the Indian main team whereas Shubman Gill has cemented his place in all three formats of the game and is touted as the Prince of Indian cricket. 

Karsan Ghavri said that Shubman Gill has worked on his flaws whereas Prithvi Shaw hasn’t. He believes that he needs to have discipline and temperament. He said: 

“You require discipline and a good temperament. You need to constantly work on yourself. You are required to occupy the crease, and if you do that, you are bound to get more runs. They are of the same age. Nothing has been lost yet. Gill has worked on his flaws, while Shaw hasn’t. He still can. He needs to work hard; otherwise, there is no point having so much potential.” 

Shubman Gill in the IPL 2023 has taken his game to a different level and is currently the leading run-getter in the league with over 850 runs to his name.
